Diary Contd.
March 9th.
Went up to the Battlefield again
in the mg. by myself. Got some notes of graves

a little to the E (Dardanelles side) of the old Rd. wh
crosses the Tommies trench by the Olive trees (just S.
of the two C. Ts from Tommies to Aust. Support trench).
going up I kept near bank of Nulla, to W. of this rd.

road is the track traceable
beside the olive trees, not
the same as the "old Krithea
road" which was much
farther east on the objve right)

M'Cays little Hqrs was between
the 2 C.Ts., at 480yds in front of
Tommies trench & 45yds behind Aust.
Support trench ["Redoubt Support" on British
maps], there is a new road crossing
obliquely just in rear of it abt 7yds
away; It is a little closer to the
Eastern C.T. than to the W. one.
A man is buried in the parados
of it - & I think another in the
parapet.
The Western C.T. joins the Aust.
Support line just on top of the
slope down to the Nulla. I think
Maj. Bennetts H.Q. in front trench
wd be just to the W. of this – the
C.T. is of course of later construction.
From our ^suppt trench I went
on to see if I cd find to any
trace of rt some position from wh

Turks were firing at our advancing
line on May 8. [I found a few
isolated clips . of Aust. cartridges
behind our line wh may
have meant tt our men
were f using covering fire at /
end of their advance – but
probably not for one wd have
found / empty cartridge shells
with them in tt case.

yesty – & noticed tt / Turks had
bn firing from very heavily from
some little dugout positions behind
an infinitesimal bank.
From the Tommies Aust. front trench to the
next trench I found nothing
– no trace of a Turkish firing line.
But beyond / next line,
near a small copse of firs
I came on the positn wh Bigg
Wether had pointed out. The
positn ws not in the firs –
I cd find none there tho I
didnt look closely; this little
fir copse ws on our (the Austln)
side o / next trench ahead
of ours at (say) 220 yds from
