in arty formation &
had to extend. 14 Bn
had a give & take scrap
cd be seen working up
& having to retire &
working up ^near / road opposite having to
retire. By 6 pm they
were seen digging in on
the slope opposite as best
they cd. If / Germs
had fought stubbornly the strength
o / positn & / wire wd have
made their attack impossible.
2 days later 13th Bn
relieved 14 Bn in front line.

Wood) ws lightly held.
Fighting patrols were ordered
to push out & occupy if
possible / high ground
commdg the Canal Crossings.
(only a bit o / canal cd be seen).
When they got down in tt 
directn ^(20/21 at night on taking over) they were met (with
fire of abt 10 m.gs. - determined
fire - from / direction o / wood.
It ws a bright moonlight
night & / Germ. ws firing 
from trenches beyond his
wire in an organised manner.
On night 21/22 13 Bn ws reld by
British troops.

The Germans buried our men
& put their paybooks on graves
& sent in Capt Cummings'
effects.

The Hindbg line ws a good
one well wired w many
dugouts.

Capt Patrick k near / tanks at
/ same time. He ws just back from Aust &
knew he ws going to be k & had divided up
his effects. The ^one Anti tank gun did most of this
damage. (He was hit at Pozieres).
Several offrs were wd, practically
all at / same place.

13 Bn went forward under
/ barrage this day betw Lihous
& Madam Wood, rt pivoting on 15 Bn.
But the Germs didnt fight - the
trench the 13 Bn took ws unoccupied
