It made 1 directi & difficul to decide as th track ws I only guide. The tracks on ma ere shd have by a road crossing but track really conrved gently in to Lroad leadiy to I crucifix, Lieut. Hodge presently realise to he ws on I wrong road. too far to (left - Nocross road us tere. He sent back a message while Bn
batter & by down. Maj Towler came up and comned presently all the Coy. from and most of offes our up there a ther maps & clecbig torches. compasses. The maps also were wrong to a lot of hospital buts marker (wh were not tere) Hodges went along 1 road toods 1 Crusifix Rp Beresford towds 1 Gully.And Beresford picke op I Farnside or some of his new in gully. This gave them their directic. (Te 49th Bn also hed taken a mark (line of double telegraph poles

50 Bn     Etinhem.

Aug 9th:  In the aftn

Bn  ws xx started to Cerisy ^& were there for abt

an hour, took over from 1st Bn.

That night they held a

sort of half circle around

the E & NE of Chipilly.

Abt midnight Maj. Fowler ^with other Coy Commdrs

went across to reconnoitre

the ground first - they were

told to take some sergts w them

& go carefully.

One wd German ws

found at / church.

Next morning some Tommies,

& 10th? Londons were found

up near the top of the Cero

Chipilly peninsula - &

Maj. Loutit ws w them - he

Morrell to find out exactly

where the Americans were.

While 50 Bn ws taking over

from 1st Bn they cd see / fighting

still going on (betw. 4 & 5pm)

During / night the Bn

ws moving across & settled

abt 10 a.m.

Stayed there tt day -

not shelled.

That aftn at 5 pm the

C.O. called a meeting of

Coy Commdrs.  This ws at

Hqrs in / gully N. of Susan Wood.

their m.gs. After crossing this rd

But these Germans scuttled

back.  Lt. Hodges Coy had

extended at / Sunken Road

but / others were still in
