Charles E W Bean, Diaries, AWM38 3DRL 606/205/1 - 1915 - 1918 - Part 10
Everything ws going very well.
It ws very dark but there
ws / land up above them.
They all knew - / offrs - tt
Gaba Tepe ought to be just
close on their right - but there
ws no land there. They had
studied the place on a ^small model
on / queen. At tt moment
they all realised tt something
must be wrong - all / offrs
(so R. thinks).
Abt 80 yds out
a shot ws suddenly fired at
them. Then 2 or 3 more. Then
/ asked hillside began to
show spasmodic rifle flashes.
A flare appeared - R. thinks
it ws on / hill, high up.
89
The steam boat cast them off
& began firing her m.g. The men
thought this ws a Turkish m.g.
- most of them were sitting huddled
- w / bullets whistling. The
men got / oars out at abt 20
yds from / beach & pulled in.
As they landed there
ws a high bank in front of
them. It ws clearly not /
place. It ws as high as a
room & something ws clearly
wrong - everything seemed
wrong. They tried to scramble
up this cliff but they ^only slipped
back. Then they found a
bit of a track up it &
went on up / hillside near
where / first Turk trench was
(? Ari Burna). It ws very steep
90
but they dragged themselves
up. As they went the
men behind some of them
(agst orders) began to fire
their rifles at / men going up
/ hill - some men also fired
from / boats.
On top they extended
to rush / Turks off the top
- & did kill a certain number -
& there Robertson ws hit.
Old Bulter ws at work on /
hillside. R. told him he ws
wanted on / beach. B ran
down there, but presently
he ws up again, his forehead
steaming w perspiration,
but wonderfully active!
