73 After the pty had bu here 5 or 10 mons there came round cos ner t a rash 4Cpl Alward, to a revolver. He must have come down I trench MA, & was at I first moment almost shot for a turk. A reported t 1 trench was clear as far as I junction at A, & the pty w wh Back was Catt7) went down & barricaded te junction to sandbags pulled down from 1 top of trench.
174 They hen got a supply of bombs &f carried on there till they were relieved by 7th Bn on the mg of Aug 8th. just after they had fineshing 1 barricade, before dork, a sugh Turk came up the trench t A & was shot dead by alward w his revolver over 1 top o1 barricade. The turk ws tooking breast high over barrisade at this time There ws a little trench wh seemed to run somewhat as L7
endin in some deegonts towdd the bottom of Owens gully – Consteps or verandahs). The Turks from here on the mg. of Aug 7 abt 10 am. started throwny boubs. They got 3 bombs at intervals into I trench the English picker one up & attempted to throw it out oi blew his hand off. Spe Alward ws wd in legs & wrist by 1 irst bomb & went out. His 73

In I night youcd observe - our oth pont line probably command id this. There ws a boub stop somewhere abt N & a short trench had to be day through to it (abt 20 7ds or 50). Pot
I was the Bomb. Stop where Mackay & Scott were Back's party ws (extreme left of the Bn. Therefore this trench was probly what was anown as the Circus.
Hapwasd don remembers wors eala Tte Hayward went over just to the tep of the crater & n in hax settled by bonbo. as marked opposite Just opposite te Grater at X wd a m.g. on a heavy stand mounted & firing toods our trenches. I seemed to be mounted in a trap door in the head cover. They cd see 1T crew. They crossed the headcover to 1 left of rayward whowsbomber gun & ten from behied shpped I bor bo in to the opening in headcover where I gun was wh stopper - gun. A good few of our men were lying on frond& Tgun. One man ws in oater & noo lying on 1 2dge of it, a wheter alive ws difficult to say. dead 3 2 45 nt. 4 4 pe ear. men were lying in port of trunch (as I) & sayw umpedover a couple at one point Hayward & alward went on & Entered ead trench at D. 20 0 30 maits leping here. dead apply of our arty, in dupouts. sas were pest pightont to 10 lot on act dinty wh part k. one oour gans had made a jagged hole the hard coser. They pubed the pine logs aside in (&squared oregon) aside & scrambled in at that shell hole - a new shedhole. There ws a ture bying dew underneate - only a few mins - deed. The head covor covered to trench running in from the poud trench (V+ so to it was like a tunnel, hollowed out on each side for sleeping in When Cpt Alward, & Hayward got in there there were turks in the covered trench IV. Other men got in Hayward ws helping
Pli Wen one man -Dodd- in when Dodd ws shot in the head. as soon as Hayward pamper into I trench he saw a man in a anifous something like the Turks singing out for our men to come round there come on Austialic - Come on Austialis - were pt them!" he sd. Ferman ofr This 1as trying to get them in port of the tunnel where they wie be shot. He had been shouting round the corner, Hayward asked him his battalion - He man spoke splends
English & it ws scarcely possible to tell to he wa a foreyner but they knew they were on I let & home of our people furtur souad. He Befre His Capt Milson came up, Short after (party got there. He asked what they were doing & sd I think youv oor them? They sil they hadnt. M. Sd "Will you come w me ? & bote Hayward & Heat Alward sd yes & started with him

probably commanded this.

tt was the Bomb-stop where Mackay &
Scott were.
Back's party ws the extreme left of
the Bn. Therefore this trench was
probly what was known as

Just opposite to the crater at X
ws a m.g. on a heavy stand mounted & firing
twds our trenches. It seemed to be mounted
in a trap door in the head cover. They cd see
the T. crew. They crossed the head cover to the left o the
gun & then from behind ^ Hayward who ws bomber slipped 3 bombs into
the opening in the headcover where the gun was
- wh stopped the gun. A good few of our men
were lying in front o the gun. One man ws in the
crater & two lying on the edge of it - whether alive
or dead ws difficult to say.

One of our guns had made a jagged hole
in the head cover. They pulled the pine logs aside
(& squared one gun) aside  & scrambled in at that
shell hole - a new shell hole. There ws a Turk
lying dead underneath - only a few
mins. dead. The head cover covered the
trench running in from the front trench (VT)
So tt it was like a tunnel, hollowed
out on each side for sleeping in.
When Cpl Alward, & Pte Hayward got in there
there were Turks in the covered trench TV.
Other men got in - Hayward ws helping

one man - ^ Pte Dodd ^ 4 Bn - in when Dodd
ws shot in the head.
As soon as Hayward jumped
into the trench he saw a man in a
uniform something like the Turks -
singing out for our men to come
round there "Come on Australia _ Come
on Australia - we've got them!" he sd.
This T ^ German offr ws trying to get them in front of
the tunnel where they wd be shot. He had
been shouting round the corner. Hayward
asked him his battalion - The man spoke splendid

he was a foreigner but they knew they
were on the left & none of our people
further round. He did not attempt to
answer as to his bn. & presently made

towds our men & ws shot thro the

There followed him an old Turk w
whiskers shouting "Allah". he ws shot at
once. The Turks kept on trying at intervals

wounded every time - finally 11 were k &
wd (all died) in the trench. Then the second
German officer sang ^shouted something tt cdnt be understood & began to throw out
rifles & revolvers. Then they came out w
their hands up. he
Before this Capt Milson came up,
shortly after the party got there. He asked what
they were doing & sd "I think you've got
them". They sd they hadnt. M. sd "Will
you come w me?" & both Hayward &
L/Cpl Alward sd yes & started with him.
