THE DEFENCE MEDAL Qualifving Service: (a) The Defence Medal will be granted for twelve months' non-oper- ational service with the forces overseas from, or outside, the country of residence between 3rd September 1939 and 2nd September 1945, i.e., all service between the dates men¬ tioned with the forces overseas from, or outside, the country of residence, not included in the operational areas listed for 1939-45 Star eligibility. The Territory of Papua and the Mandated Territory of NEW GUINEA are part of the Commonwealth of Australia and service in those territories, for the purpose of the award of the Defence Medal, is service in the country of residence and is not service over¬ seas. (b) Service for 6 months in the Northern Territory, north of par¬ allel 14 degrees south, between 19th February 1942 and 12th November 1943, or in Torres Strait Islands between leth March 1942 and 18th June 1943. (c) Service counting for the Defence Medal in respect of which a non-operational decorstion has beeh swarded. CLOTHING In an endeavour to prevent pilfering, all personnel must ensure that their own washing is removed from clothes lines before 1700 hrs daily. RESS- 30. Röns Medal ribbons will be sewn on to strip of talc as provided by QM Store. These will be sewn on to tunics centrally above the left pocket. The following rules apply to the wearing of ribbons in rows: 5 ribbons are to be worn with four in the top row and one centrally placed in the second row. (b) 6 ribbons are to be worn with four in the top row and two centrally placed in the second row. (c) LID emblems will be sewn on to SD uniforms. 31. PaY All members are advised to pay excess monies into their paybooks and not to carry large sums of money. The next pay period will be on Wednesday at a time to be notified latec. Despatches which it is clear cannot conneet with the vessel en route will e forwarded to London as a complete mail distinct from that for HMXS "Shropshire" and Air Mail should thus be available to the Contingent upon its arrival in tae United Kingdom, when a representative of the Contingent will promptly contact the GPO there.

            Arrangements are being made to return to store all items of

        clothing and equipment previously issued to members of the                         contingent.

        VICTORIAN members are advised to return to their homes all items

        which have not been issued since their inclusion in the Contingent.

        To ensure uniformity of Dress, members are NOT permitted to carry

        any items which is not a new issue, except one set of KD clothing

        for fatigue dress.

25.   LEAVE

           All members proceeding from the camp area must be in possession 

        of a leave pass which will be issued on the leave parade at

        1615 hrs daily and 1215 hrs Saturdays.

26.   GREATCOATS

             Attention is drawn to Standing Orders for Dress, paragraph 4

        directing that greatcoats will be worn only when ordered.

             All members who have served for any period in a malerious area

        will commence a course of suppressive treatment forthwith.

                  It may be practicable on approach to the Postmaster

                  General's Department in the United Kingdom for postage

                  rates for: -

                                  (i) Newspapers, Books and periodicals;

                                 (ii) Packets: and

                                (iii) Parcels

                 to be secured on a concession basis similar to those

                 expressed in  (a) above, conditional on postings concerned

                 being passed through unit controlled channels tot he

                 Post Office concerned, but failing that the following

O NOTE           Letters as above will be eligible for air  conveyance

                          to Australia BUT ONLY under arrangements as to

                          posting agreed to by the British Postal Authorities

                          with whom the matter will be discussed promptly

                          upon arrival. Postings made independently of

                          any approved arrangement may be forwarded by sea

                          means - and surcharged if postage not affixed.  

 

CABLES   

Lodgements may be made at British Empire ports of call and in the 

United Kingdom in the following catagories, and the rates shown

as applicable are expressed in sterling :-

Full rate                                      - 1/3 per word

Deferred rate                            - 7 1/2d per word

o Daily Letter Telegrams       -10/5 for minimum of 25 words

                                                       plus 5d. per word in excess of

                                                       25.

o Social Letter Telegram         -5/- for a minimum of 13 words

                                                        plus 5d. per word in excess of

                                                        13.

E.F.M. Messages                        - 2/6 per message of standard

                                                         texts - limited to 3 figure

                                                         groups plus address and signature

                                                         detail.

MAILS FROM AUSTRALIA    

Mails for AIF and RAAF personnel of the contingent will be

prepared and despatched by the Postmaster General's Department in

Australia. Those which represent Air Mail postings and which

circumstances may permit of connection with HMAS "Shropshire" at

ports of call en route, will be separately bagged, but enclosed in

the mail for that vessel.      

Despatches which is is clear cannot connect with the vessel en

route will e forwarded to London as a complete mail distinct from

that for HMAS " Shropshire" and Air Mail should thus be available to

the Contingent upon it's arrival in the United Kingdom, when a

representative of the Contingent   will promptly contact the
