SECTION I
CEREMONIAL ORDERS FOR THE VICTORY MARCH
1. General
The Parade will take the form of a drive and march past His Majesty The King
followed by a "fly past" by the Royal Air Force. A separate order with regard to the
"fly past" is being issued by the Royal Air Force.
2. His Majesty The King
At 1009 hours, His Majesty The King, accompanied by Her Majesty The Queen and
Their Royal Highnesses Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, with a Captain's Escort
with Standard of the Household Cavalry, is driving in a carriage from Buckingham Palace
to the Marble Arch, where the Royal Procession arrives at 1025 hours. From there His
Majesty will follow the Marching route to the Saluting Point, preceding the marching troops.
His Majesty The King is taking the salute in the Mall immediately opposite Marlborough
Gate at 1120 hours.
3. The Procession of the Chiefs of Staff and the Supreme Commanders
The Chiefs of Staff of the three Services at V.E. and V.J. Day, together with the
Supreme Allied Commanders, are preceding the Mechanized Column, leaving Clarence Gate,
Regents Park, at 0917 hours and arriving at the Saluting Point at 1021 hours.
4. Contingents taking part and Order of March
Initially there will be two columns. One column will be composed entirely of vehicles
and hereafter referred to as the Mechanized Column : the other will be composed entirely of
marching personnel and hereafter referred to as the Marching Column. The Mechanized
Column will precede the Marching Column past the Saluting Point.
The order of march for the Mechanized Column is shown in Appendix "A".
The order of march for the Marching Column is shown in Appendix "B".
5. Assembly Areas
Orders for the concentration of contingents in their respective assembly areas are given
in Section II of this order and in Appendices "E" and "F".
6. Marshalling Officers
Each Contingent will be provided with Marshalling Officers (for detail see columns (j)
and (k) of Appendices "A" and "B" respectively), who will wear a white band 3 inches
broad on the right arm. Marshalling Officers found by the Army will wear Service Dress.
7. Dress
(a) British Army personnel in the Marching Column will wear Battle Dress, Drill order.
Only rifles or pistols will be carried. Detailed orders concerning dress for Army personnel in
the Mechanized Column have already been issued.
(b) All other Service Contingents are issuing their own orders regarding dress.
(c) No swords or sticks will be carried and gloves will not be worn.
(d) The Civilian Services will wear their appropriate uniform or plain clothes with
headgear.
8. Starting Points
(a) The Starting Point for the Mechanized Column will be Clarence Gate, Regents Park.
The head of the Column will pass this Starting Point at 0918 hrs.
(b) The Starting Point for the Marching Column will be Tyburn Gates, the two most
westerly gates out of Hyde Park at the Marble Arch.
The head of the Column will pass this Starting Point at 1035 hrs.

(c) Lining the Route
The only part of the route to be lined by troops will be from the junction of Whitehall
and Trafalgar Square along the Mall to just past Buckingham Palace in Constitution
Hill. Troops for this purpose will be found by the Brigade of Guards and separate
instructions will be issued by the Major-General commanding the Brigade of Guards.
(d) Control of Crowds
Assistance to the Police in keeping the route clear will be given by the Army and
R.A.F. at certain key points.
10. Formation and Rate of March
(a) Mechanized Column
Vehicles will normally proceed two abreast at 8 m.i.h. with 20 yards interval
between vehicles from front to rear, as near the centre of the road as possible, and on
either side of centre street islands.
(b) Marching Column
All Contingents will march in ranks of twelve abreast at 116 paces to the minute by
the centre except between the Admiralty Arch and Buckingham Palace, when Contingents
will march by the left. The centre files of each rank will march as nearly as possible in
the centre of the road.
The right half will keep to the right of, and the left half to the left of, the centre
street islands, etc., respectively.
Where there are no centre street islands the two halves will close together.
Along Oxford Street and New Oxford Street, the number of islands necessitates
marching continuously in two halves of six.
Officers marching alone at the head of their Units will keep to the left of the centre
street islands, etc.
Wherever possible an officer will form the left file of each rank of twelve.
11. Saluting Point
(a) The Saluting Point in the Mall opposite Marlborough Gate will be marked by
Company Colours (small flags). See diagram, Appendix "D". Company Colours and
their bearers will be provided by the Officer Commanding, 1st Bn. IRISH GUARDS.
The command "Eyes Left" will be given just before reaching the Company Colour
at point "A", i.e., 10 yards from His Majesty.
The command "Eyes Front" will be given when the vehicles, or the tail of the
detachments concerned have cleared point "B".
On the command "Eyes Left" all officers will salute and remain at the Salute until
"Eyes Front" is given except that officers marching alone at the head of their units will
salute independently.
(b) Mechanized Column
In the mechanized column all commands will be given by the vehicle commander or
the commander of each pair of vehicles, except in the Royal Armoured Corps where
commands will be given by the Senior Officer over the wireless.
Personnel manning vehicles, with the exception of drivers, will sit or stand to
attention. Officers only will salute.
(c) Marching Column
Each Allied contingent and each independent contingent will receive words of
command from its own officers.
For the purpose of giving words of command on the march, all the Army
contingents will be grouped into blocks of not more than six ranks, and all commands
will be given by the officer on the left of the first rank and on the left of each successive
rank in each contingent. The effect of this is that no officer will be required to make
himself heard over more than six ranks. All words of command will be prefixed by the
cautionary order "No. of det." (To be numbered consecutively within the contingent).
12. Standards, Guidons, Colours and Banners
Colours will be carried at the "slope" from the Starting Point to Parliament Square.
They will be carried at the "Carry" along Parliament Street and Whitehall until past
the War Office, when they will be carried at the "slope" to the Admiralty Arch.
Thence they will be carried at the "Carry" until the command "Eyes Front" has been
given after passing His Majesty, when the Colours will again be carried at the "slope".
On the command "Eyes Left" at the Saluting Point, which command will be given
by the Commanding Officer of each group of Colours, the Colours will be "Let Fly".
On the command "Eyes Front", Colours will be secured.
Standards and Colours will be decorated with laurel wreaths, which will be issued on
the evening of 7th June, 1946, by Headquarters, London District.
(25541) B

13. Bands
(a) Two Bands of the Brigade of Guards will be stationed immediately opposite the
Saluting Point.
These Bands will play all troops past His Majesty (the Bands will play continuous
music).
(b) Bands taking part in the Marching Column will, as far as possible, provide
continuous music during the March, but will NOT play when passing the Cenotaph or
within 300 yards on either side of the Saluting Point, except the leading Band
(GRENADIER GUARDS), to which special orders will be issued.
(c) Massed Pipers will play in the Mall during the interval between the arrival
of His Majesty at the Saluting Point and the time the procession is due to arrive.
Separate instructions will be issued.
14. Halts and March Discipline
(a) Mechanized Column
The Mechanized Column will halt for approximately 20 minutes on arrival at
Parliament Square. All vehicles will close up head to tail before halting. Drivers
can be changed and essential refuelling will be carried out during this halt.
(b) Marching Column
(i) The Marching Column will halt for approximately 20 minutes on arrival at
Parliament Square.
(ii) Marshalling Officers will ensure that all troops in rear close up to the correct
intervals before halting.
(iii) Troops will not normally be allowed to fall out during the halt.
(iv) All troops taking part will march to "attention" along the whole route.
Rifles will be carried at the slope or at the trail, according to the custom of the
Regiment or Service. Arms will be changed as required, orders being given by officers
as detailed in para. II (c). Troops will be allowed to march "at ease" after passing
Hyde Park Corner.
The Civilian Services will march to "attention" from Parliament Square to the
War Office and from Admiralty Arch to Buckingham Palace.
15. The Cenotaph
On reaching the Cenotaph in Whitehall, the Mechanized Column will pass on either side,
and vehicle commanders will give "Eyes right" or "Eyes left" as applicable.
Similarly, the Marching Column will pass on either side of the Cenotaph as for centre
street islands, and the command "Inwards Salute" will be given. Words of command will
be given as at the Saluting Point (see para. II).
No compliments will be paid during the march, except at the Cenotaph and when
passing the Saluting Point.
16. Dispersal
Orders for the dispersal of both columns are given in Section III of this Order and in
Appendix "G".
17. Synchronisation of Watches
Watches of all concerned will be synchronised by means of the BBC Time Signal not
earlier than 0700 hours on 8th June, 1946.
