XX 93. MARCH THROUGH CAPETOWN OF LONDON VICTORY MARCH CONTINGENT
1. Personnel of the London Victory March Contingent
comprising 250 all ranks and 100 members of the Ships Company HMAS
SHROPSHIRE, will march through CAPE TOWN Friday 10 May 46.
2. SALUTE
The Salute will be taken by the Mayor of Cape Town, Mr
A. BLOOMBERG, ED. The head of the column will reach the Saluting
Base at 1200 hrs.
3. COMMANDER OF THE PARADE
Major-General K.W. EATHER, CBE, DSO, ED, will command the
Parade.
4. FORMATION
The Contingent will march six abreast in the following
order:-
Band
RAN (incl 100 of Ships Company)
AMF
RAAF.
Female personnel of each service will march four paces
in rear of their respective services.
5. DISTANCES
Between head of Band and RAN - 25 paces
Between Services - 15 paces
6. DRESS
Service Dress - Belts and Sidearms
Troops will march with bayonets fixed
Female members will wear greatcoats
7. ROUTE
Dock Road, Adderly St., Wale St., St. George's St.,
Strand St., Adderly St., Darling St.
8. ASSEMBLY AREA
Area opposite Ships berth.
9. STARTING POINT
Customs House on Dock Rd.
10. BAND
Band of HMAS SHROPSHIRE will march at head of the column.
11. PROCEDURE AT ASSEMBLY AREA
1105 hrs - Markers report to WO I WATSON at foot of
midships gangway.

on to their markers
1130 hrs - Parade handed over to Brig M.J. MOTEN
1125 hrs - Parade handed over to Maj-Gen K.W. EATHER.

12. DISPERSAL POINT
Dispersal Point will be in the Mayor's Garden behind
the City Hall. Rifles will be loaded on a vehicle at the
dispersal point under supervision of WO II SAXTON. Refreshments
will be served in the Mayor's Garden.
13. RIFLE PARTY
Rifle Party, consisting of 20Rs from HQ and each Pl
under the supervision of the CQMS will collect rifles at the
dispersal point and return them to the Ships Armoury at the
conclusion of the Reception.

No 94 ARRIVAL IN ENGLAND AND SUBSEQUENT MOVEMENT
Advice has been received from Naval Authorities in England
that the programme will be as follows :-
30 May 46 - Arrive PORTSMOUTH
31 May 46 - Disembark 0800 hrs, move by special train
to LONDON.
8 Jun 46 - Victory March through LONDON.
1 Jul 46 - Depart PORTSMOUTH.
14 Aug 46 - RTA MELBOURNE.
It is also advised that the :ship will not visit other countries
on the return journey. Information regarding camp sites and
leave arrangements will be promulgated later.
No 95 MAINTENANCE STOCKS OF CLOTHING AND EOUIPMENT
Pilfering of "Q" Maintenance stocks is occuring at an alarming
rate. All ranks are warned of the seriousness of such losses and
must report the presence of any items illegally in the possession
of anyone on board.
No 96 BEDDING
Although sleeping on the upper docks is encouraged members
are reminded that bedding MUST be stowed below each morning.
No 97 POSTAL ARRANGEMENTS - FREETOWN
Mail closes at 2000 hrs on 20 May 46. Letter rates are as
follows :-
AIRMAIL
3D per 2 ounce - 3D for each additional ½ ounce.
ORDINARY
no stamps required.
Personnel are advised NOTtto send parcels as they may be
delayed in FRETOWN for some time awaiting shipment.
It is probable that an AIR MAIL will be waiting for us when
we arrive.
No 98 LEAVE - FREETOWN
Due to cases of Varicella (chicken pox) on board, no leave
will be possible in FREETOWN.

No 99. CABLE FROM LONDON
The following information has been received from LONDON:-
(i) The Resident Minister, the Honourable John Beasley, and
official party will visit the Ship on day of arrival, to welcome the
Contingent.
(ii) Male members of the Contingent will be quartered in camp
situated in Kensington Gardens with British and other Dominion
Contingents. Women's Services will be quartered at Bushy Park,
near HAMPTON COURT.
(iii) Australian Victory Forces Canteen is to be established
at Australia House.
(iv) Special ACF Hostel for women members will be at Sloane
Gardens to provide accommodation for leave periods.
(v) Arrangements are in hand to organise trips to various parts
of England and Scotland, with a possibility of a representative
party to Germany.

CONCERT
A concert will be held on the Quarterdeck, weather permitting,
on Tuesday and Wednesday next at 2000 hrs. Attendance will be as

No 100. INFORMATION FROM LONDON
The following particulars regarding the Victory March, are
promulgated for the information of all ranks:
1. ACCOMMODATION
(e) All male personnel in the marching column, less the British
Merchant Navy detachment, will be accommodated in tented camps
in Kensington Gardens, LONDON. This camp will close on
15 June 46 after which alternative accommodation will be arrange
(b) All women's Services, less WRNS, will be accommodated in
a hutted camp in Busboy Park, LONDON.
2. BEDDING
Male ORs will carry the navy issue stretchers, but all
other sleeping requirements will be provided at the camps.
3. BATHING
The River Serpentine close by Kensington Gardens is availabl
for swimming. Troops mast provide their own costumes.
4. PROVOST
Regimental Police are being provided to patrol unit lines.
5. PRIVATE MOTOR VEHICLES
No privately owned motor cars or motor cycles will be
allowed in camps. There will be a space available close to
each camp where privately owned cars and motor cycles may be
parked at the owners' risk.
6. DETAILS OF THE VICTORY MARCH ISSUED BY THE CHIEFS OF STAFF IN
T. UNITED KINGDOM
(a) SALUTE
The Salute will be taken by His Majesty, the King. He will
be accompanied by Her Majesty, the Queen, and Their Royal
Highnesses, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret Ross. The
Royal Party, with a Captain's Escort of Household Cavalry, will
drive in a carriage from Buckingham Palace to Marble Arch and
then to the Saluting Base in THE WALL.
(b) COMPOSITION OF THE PARADE
The Parade will comprise a detachment of each of the three
Fighting Services, Civil Defence Services and Industrial
Contingents from the Allies, Dominions, India and the Colonies.
(c) THE PARADE
The Parade will be divided into two columns:
(i) A motorized column
(ii) A marching column.
There will be a fly past by the Royal Air Force at the
conclusion of the march past.
(d) ROUTE OF THE MARCHING COLUMN
TYBURN GATE, MARBLE BAR, OXFORD ST, CHARING CROSS RD,
ST MARTIN'S PLACE, TRAFALGAR SQUARE (east side), NORTHUMBERLAND
AVE, VICTORIA EMBANKMENT, BRIDGE ST (sharp right turn),
PARLIAMENT ST, WHITEHALL, ADMIRALTY ARCH, THE MALL,
CONSTITUTION HILL, QUEEN'S RD, HYDE PARK CORNER, APSLEY GATE
into HYDE PARK.

(e) DISTINGUISHED COMMANDERS
Ten or twelve high ranking officers who have commanded Armies,
Corps, or their equivalent, during the war, will precede the motorized
column in suitable vehicles, with a motor cycle escort.
(f) COLOURS
National Flags of Allies, Dominions and Colonies, Standards and
Guirdons of the Cavalry, King's and Regimental Colours of the Brigade
of Guards and Infantry of the Line, will be carried. The Australian
Contingent will carry the Australian Flag.
(g) DRESS
Battle Dress will be worn.
(h) SEATING ACCOMMODATION
No stands are being erected for the general public, but there will
be an official enclosure at the Saluting Base in THE WALL.
No 101. CUSTOMS' DECLARATIONS
all personnel are required to declare any dutiable goods in their
possession. These include:
Tobacco, Cigars, Cigarettes, Spirits
Silk and Artificial Silk in all forms
Wearing Apparel, including Hats, Gloves and Shoes
Woollen, Linen and Cotton Articles, including Household Linen
and Handkerchiefs
Leather goods of all kinds
Toilet Requisites and preparations of all kinds, including
Scent, Soap, Toilet waters, Powder etc.
Clocks and Watches. Jewellery
Cameras
Sugar, Tea, Coffee, Chocolate, Dried, Preserved and Candied
Fruits including Currants, Rasins, Prunes etc.
Ginger, Confectionary of all sorts
Stationary, Playing Cards
Pipes, Cigarette Holders, Mechanised Lighters, Matches
This applies whether or not the goods habe been worn or used.
Forms S569(a) will be filled in on 23 May 46 under platoon and
flight arrangements. Women's Services will be separate. Where applicable
the word "nil" will be inserted alongside the signature of any member
having no dutiable goods to declare.
The following concessions apply to their Contingent:
CIGARETTES AND TOBACCO: Quantities up to 200 cigarettes and ½ lb
tobacco may be taken ashore duty free.
FOODSTUFFS: A total quantity of 25 lbs of foodstuffs may be taken
ashore duty free providing that no one foodstuff (whether rationed or not)
exceeds 5 lbs.
FOOD PARCELS: Food parcels addressed to individuals in the UK may
be taken ashore duty free providing that they contain no more than 11 lbs
weight, with no one item more than 2 lbs, with a declaration of contents
written on the parcel, and no dutiable goods whatsoever therein.
Very heavy penalties are imposed for attempting to evade payment
of Customs’ duties because smuggling encourages black markets. This
particularly applies to tobacco and cigarettes. However, Customs’ officers
generally are most understanding, especially to Service personnel
providing they are straight forward.

No 102. DISEMBARKMENT ORDER - VICTORY MARCH CONTINGENT
1 SUMMARY
The Victory Marh Contingent will arrive at PORTSMOUTH
shortly after 1200 hrs on 30 May 46. Leave will be granted
until 0100 hrs 31 May 46. The Contingent will march through
PORTSMOUTH at midday 31 May 46, and then entrain for LONDON,
arriving at WATERLOO station at approx. 1600 hrs.
11 TIMINGS
(a) Thursday 30 May 46
0800 hrs - Parade with rifles, roll call, inspection.
0905 hrs - RAAF draw uniforms from DCHQ.
0930 hrs - AMF draw SD and hats from DCHQ.
1100 hrs - Baggae party for heavy gear of Women’s
Services report to Baggage Officers in Ward
Room Flat.
1115 hrs - Lunch
1145 hrs -Second kitbags stacked with trunks into
pl areas.
1200 hrs – Parade. Dress:- SD (no 1), hats, xxxxxxxxxxxx, xxxxx, - (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx boots and gaiters and belts

gaiters, belts, sidearms and rifles.
1000 hrs – Kitbags or suitcases and stretchers tied
together and stacked in pl or flight areas
in torpedo space.
1030 hrs – Baggage party for Women’s Services report
to Baggage o fficers in Ward Room Flat.
1055 hrs – Baggage party for personal gear report to
Baggage Officers in torpedo space - cut
lunches drawn in bulk from cafeteria and
Ward Room.
1100 hrs – Contingent fall in on wharf for training
prior to march, dressed ready for march -
formal march dress.
1130 hrs – Fall in for march – normal march procedure
will apply.
1145 hrs – March commences.
1215 hrs – March concludes.
1300 hrs – Collect personal gear and cut lunches at
station.
1345 hrs – Entrain PORTSMOUTH station.
1400 hrs – Train departs.
1555 hrs – Arrive WATERLOO, LONDON.
1600 hrs – Embus.
1615 hrs – Arrive KENSINGTON GARDENS.

30 May 46 to stack heavy gear in Ward Room Flat -
remainder of personal gear at 1030 hrs 31 May 46.
(c) Officers’ Baggage
All heavy gear to be stacked with Contingent trunks
by 1100 30 May 46. Remainder of gear ready for unloading
in same place by 1000 hrs 31 May 46.
(d) Women’s Services
(i) Heavy gear packed and ready for stacking by Baggage
party at 1100 hrs 30 May 46.
(ii) Remainder of gear packed ready for stacking by
baggage party 1030 hrs 31 May 46.
(iii) Band cases, wallets, greatcoats will be left on Ship
until after the march when they will be taken to
PORTSMOUTH station
(e) ORs - All Services
Kitbags or suitcases and stretchers will be tied
securely together, clearly marked and stacked in pl and
flight area in the torpedo space at 1000 hrs 31 May 46.
These will be transported to PORTSMOUTH station and will
then be taken by the individuals in the train.
iv BEDDING
All bedding issued by the Ship, except stretchers, will be
rolled, securely tied, labelled and stowed in the spirits store
located aft in WOs' sleeping flat. WO II LAXTON with 1 OR per
pl and flight will supervise the stowing in pl and flight lots.
v ENTRAINING – DETRAINING – EMBUSSING – DEBUSSING
Lt A.J.deB. FORBES, AMF, will be Contingent Officer
responsible for the above.
vi CUT LUNCHING
Cut luncher will be issued at PORTSMOUTH station.
