MAILS FROM AUSTRALIA
Mails for AMF and RAAF personnel of the Contingent will be
prepared and despatched by the Postmaster General’s Department in
Australia. Those which represent Air Mail postings and which
circumstances may permit of connection with HMAS "Shropshire" at ports
of call en route, will be separately bagged, but enclosed in the mail
for that vessel.
Despatches which it is clear cannot connect with the vessel en
route will be forwarded to London as a complete mail distinct from
that for HMAS "Shropshire" and Air Mail should thus be available to
the Contingent upon its arrival in the United Kingdom, when a
representative of the Contingent will promptly contact the GPO there.
In view of ship sailing frequencies and the time necessarily
involved in vessels reaching the United Kingdom, parcel, packet
and newspaper mails for the Contingent would occupy long periods in
transit from Australia. Many postings in this category would thus
reach the United Kingdom following the departure of the Contingent
on the return journey, and in general it would seem inadvisable in
- 3 -
the circumstances, for personnel to encourage postings to them
while abroad of articles in the newspaper, packet or parcel
category.
It is mentioned also that personnel could, with advantage,
suggest to their correspondents the desirability of using Air
Letter Forms in writing to them. These are available at post
offices at a cost of 7d each, which includes air postage. They
occupy much less space for mail conveyance purposes and are
viewed as securing more expeditious Air Mail conveyance to the
United Kingdom and elsewhere than the normal letter forwarded at
Air Mail rates. The latter article is much heavier and more bulky
than the Air Letter Form.
