DECODE.
TO DEFENCE
MELBOURNE.
T.150. 9.8.18.
All our Divisions took part in recent completely successful
operations, and again distinguished themselves by their
gallantry and bearing which could not be beaten. The
captures accounted for by our corps alone amount to 5,000
prisoners and over 100 guns including heavy and railway
guns also many hundreds of machine guns. I am delighted
to say that our casualties are extraordinarily small
owing to complete surprise of whole operation. Greatest
credit is due to every single man engaged.
GENERAL BIRDWOOD.

REPLY FROM DEFENCE DEPARTMENT, MELBOURNE, TO TELEGRAM
FROM GENERAL BIRDWOOD - T.150 - 9.8.1918.
Details of the part played by Australians in the recent
Offensive have been earerly awaited but the particulars
contained in your telegram are beyond all expectations.
Commonwealth Government send its heartiest congratulations
to all on the brilliancy displayed - the unconquerable valour -
the important captures made - and above all the comforting
news regarding casualties. It is a matter for additional
congratulation that all Divisions of the A.I.F. were enabled
to share with such very fine results.
