The detachment of the 17th Armoured Car Battalion held in Corps Reserve (2 sections each of 2 cars) will be employed on 7 day.- the special duty of long distance reconnaissance on These sections will be sent forward under the orders of the C.O., 17th Armoured Car Battalion, passing the green line as soon as practicable after zero plus four hours, and proceeding eastward following the lifts of our Heavy Artillery Bombardment so as to pass the blue line at or after zero plus five hours. The area to be reconnoitred lies in the bend of the SOMME Nerth of the VILLERS-BRETONNEUK - CHAULNES Railway; but the old SOMME battlefield lying N.E. of CHAULNES need not be entered. Infermation is required as to presence, distribution and movement of enemy supporting and reserve troops, and his defensive erganizations within this area. While the primary function of this detachment is to reconnoître, and not to fight, except defensively, advantage should be taken of every opportunity to damage the enemy's tele¬ graphic and telephonic communications. The following information as to enemy organizations is thought to be reliable:- Billets and Detraining point. VAUVILLERS Divisional H.Q. and billets. PROZART Divisional H.Q. and billets. After Battle of Oct 8.

Stage 1. If our right flank is to rest on Rosieres Station.

Aug. 9th         i.e. Line A on Map.

1st Div. tomorrow the right (less 1 Bgde) to move through 5th

Div. and, if necessary with help of tanks to make

good the country as far as & consolidate on a line

from beyond Road Crossing E.g. Rosieres Station, thence

through X.20 central to X13.b to X.7.d.0.3;

using the Reserve Brigade of the 5th Division as its reserve

Brigade, until such time as its own Reserve brigade can be

brought up. -

5th Div. will hold the blue line between Main road and

X.7.d.0.3. bringing up its right to conform to left of 1st

Div. - This sector must temporarily be held by 2 Brigades

finding their own Reserve brigades, until such time as its own 3d

Brigade can be released.

4th Div. will hold the blue line - from the Somme to

the Main Road; 2 Brigades in line, 1 in reserve.

Stage 2.

Aug 10.   If our right flank is to be pushed east towards Lihons.

(a) 13th Brigade to come up to 4th Div., to relieve 1st Brigade

1st Brigade to pass over to 1st Div., & latter will restore

its former Reserve brigade to 5th Division.

(b) 1st Division, on a 2 Brigade front, will advance its line

to the line B - aided by tanks, if necessary.

2nd Div. will advance similary through 5th Div. & make

good the line before beyond Framerville.

4th Div. will bring its right up to confirm.

Stage 3.

Aug 11. - 3d Div. to relieve 4th Div withdrawn to xxx Corps reserve

5th Div. withdrawn to Corps Reserve

1st Div. - if necessary, advances its line to line C

to include the Knoll N.W. of Lihons. - 

G.O.C.R.A. will so distribute the Arty. as to provide a mobile Brigade for

each Infantry brigade that has to undertake advances; remainder to be

used defensively to cover the whole front. -

Reconnaissance by Armoured Cars

The detachment of the 17th Armoured Car Battalion held in

Corps Reserve (2 sections each of 2 cars) will be employed on the

special duty of long distance reconnaissance on Z day.-

These sections will be sent forward under the orders of the C.O. 17th Armoured

Car Battalion, passing the green line as soon as practicable after Zero + 4hrs and

proceeding Eastward following the lifts of our Heavy Artillery Bombardment

so as to pass the blue line at or after Zero + 5hrs. -

The area to be reconnoitred lies between the in the bend of the Somme

North of the Villers - Bretonneux = Chaulnes Railway; but the old Somme

battlefield lying N.E. of Chaulnes need not be entered.

                   Chuignolles - Div. H.Q. & Billets

                   Rainecourt - Billets

                   Cappy - Aerodrome & dumps.

                   Foucancourt - Corps H.Q., dump, billets

                   Chaulnes - Important railway junction

                   Omiėcourt - Dumps

                   Fontaine - Aerodrome, Div. H.Q. & dump.

C.O. 17th A.C. Battalion should establish a collecting point for

information & transmit same as rapidly as possible to 4th & 5th

Aust Div. H.Q. , the latter Division arranging for repeating same to

Corps by priority wire.

All returning cars will xxx inform all our troops whom they pass of any

information likely to be of immediate value to them. -
