[*H.Q.
4TH AUSTRALIAN
DIVISION.
No AO 21/188
Date 11/8/18*]
To : Headquarters,
4th Aust.Division,
FRANCE.
I have to acknowledge your letter of the 29th inst., enclosing
copy of letter sent by you to Lieut-General. Sir. John. Monash. K. C. B., V. D.
I respectfully wish to draw your attention to the paragraph
wherein you state, should he, Lieut-General Monash, K.C.B.,V.D., require
further evidence, you can call upon Lieut-Colonel Sturdee. I never
served under him whatsoever, during the time he commanded the 4th
Pioneer Battalion, nor anywhere else in my life. With reference to
my being sent for a F.G.C.M. which however did not eventuate, I wish
to draw your attention to the fact that I was under arrest some time,
and furthermore whilst the Court Martial was pending, I was doing
forward Area work, and subsequently I was sent for to D.H.Q., and
went before Brigadier General Glasgow who censured me, and told me
the matter was finished, so it seems rather hard for it to be brought
against me now.
Relative to the good reports you say I claim, I can produce
the originals, one is dated 29.12.17. from your D.H.Q. under the then
G.O.C. whilst I was on Salvage Work. The next one from Lieut-Colonel
E.M.WILLIAMS, G.S.O. 1st Aust.Division, dated 3.11.17. The next one
is an extract from the Corps Salvage Officer's Report dated 27.12.17.
The next one is dated 25.7.18. from Major Morrison lately Commanding
4th Aust. Pioneer Battalion. I am enclosing you certified true copies
of these which please acknowledge.
In reference to the report sent in by Lieut-Colonel. W. H.
Sanday, I have never served under him except when he was second -in -
Command and during that period he never once reported on me to the
C.O. for carrying out any of my duties inefficiently, neither did he
himself everonce personally speak to me on the matter.
I would be very glad if these reports may be sent along to
Lieut-General Sir John Monash. K.C.B., V.D. for his perusal.
S. H. Adams.
CAPTAIN.
