Diary of Herbert Vincent Reynolds, 1917-1918 - Part 6










at 7am, & at 8 am paraded in the main
corridor ready to leave for Harefield. Met
Bob Hadyn this morning. Left hospital in
motor & caught train for London at
stn, changed for Denham, at & reached
the end of our journey at about 1 30 pm.
Motored to No 1 A A H at Harefield Park.
a distance of 2½ miles. A fine dinner was
served out to us after which we handed
in our uniforms & were issued with a suit
of blues, I was put in No. 33 ward.
Friday 18th.
Have had an extremely bad
night with severe headaches, temp
has been high.
Sunday 19th.
Shifted to No 16 ward.
Daily day 8
The day has been rather
cold after dinner Harry Madden &
I had a walk into Wilton, a town
about 2 miles away, we did not see much
of the place as it was just, at dusk that we got
there, we had tea in a small tea room.
after which we walked back to camp &
seen a concert in the new concert hall at 8 pm
Tuesday 11th
All the men in this camp vote
on the referendum today.
Wednesday 12th
I was classified B1 again
today
Thursday 13th
Reported on sick parade
with severe cold, to get medicine for week
& get chest rubbed twice daily. Received
packet of letters from home.
Sunday 16th
Snow has been falling
almost all day & the place is covered
with white mantle
Monday 17th
The day had[?] [?] [?]
cold am extremely [[?]] [[?]] of frost
has frozen the ground [[?]] the
surface is like glass Over all

Tuesday 18th
I put in [?]
for some leave today. Have had my
classification altered from [?] to
B & A 1 today

January
Tuesd 1st
New Years DaySaturday broke
any thing but promising, the whole
countryside being covered with frost
looking like being under a
mantle of snow. I started the
day after breakfast, by falling in
for a fatigue job at No 5 cookhouse
after dinner my mate H Maddin &
I took a stroll to Barford a very
ancient little village about 2 miles
away. The principal item in the days
festivities was dinner which was
A 1 consisting of Roast beef & potatoes
with boiled cabbage, Roast pork &
boiled potatoes, Date pudding & to
finish off the rare occasion a pint
of the best ale procurable. Spent
the evening at a concert in No 7
concert hall by the
Saturday 5th
After dinner along with
two mates I walked into Wilton &
spent the afternoon looking around
the historic little town, we went
through the park & grounds of the
Earl of Pembroke's residence which
is being used as a hospital at
present. I had my watch fixed
up, also. We had tea, a small hall
which is being used for the purpose
of providing cheap refreshments to the
troops.
Sund 6th
The day set in very
wet & continued so throughout the day
Mond 7th
Left this morning for
Military hospital for blood test
Thurs 17th
Xmas boxes were distributed
this morning Snow fell during
the night.
Friday 18th
Classified this
morning & marked B1 a4.
Sat 19th Shifted to No 8
camp this morning, into No 18 hut
reported at furlough office at [no?]
for my furlough.
Sund 20th Parade at 9 30 pm
detailed for guard. got the mess orderly
job a rather decent one.
Tuesday 22nd
Handed in all my gear
& received my furlough pass at about
10 am walked to Wilton & caught
a train at about noon, arrived in
London about 3.15 pm & went to
A T F headquarters after which I went
to Keys & remained there for the
evening.
Wed 23rd
Went to Dartford
this morning met Herb just after
dinner & remained at the camp till
about 6 pm had tea & we set out for
town where we had some refreshment
at the Aldwych Theatre then went to
the Pavilion theatre to the show
"Any old Thing" Had a very pleasant
evening
Thurs 24th
Went down to see
old friends at 40 Weymouth St had tea
with them then went to Victoria Club.
Frid 25th
Went down to A T F
headquarters & got a half fare voucher
for Macclesfield caught the midday
train at Euston, passed through
Northampton & arrived at Stafford at
about 4 pm changed & caught train
at 4 45p, arrived Macelesfield
at about 6 10 pm. Located the
address I had & greatly surprised
the friends by walking along they
had not received word that I was
coming Received a real fine welcome
Sat 26th
After breakfast Gert
took me for a walk over on the
hills & I got a real fine view
of the town, seen the 108 steps
& the interior of the Parish church
After dinner Ada & I went
for a walk through & up
the Tegsnose. After tea we
spent the evening at the pictures
in the Theatre.
Sunday 27th
Went to Gewerth
for a walk with Mr Kennedy, seen
the tomb of Samuel Johnston
Sat 9th
Went for a walk to Forvant
this afternoon with O'Benton went to
picture show at Fovant camp & visited
J Bishop at the hospital. The day
has been fine but an extremely high
wind has been blowing from the South
Sund 10th
Church parade at 10 am
the Bishop of Salisbury addressed us
After dinner a mate & I walked
into Wilton we went out to the
racecourse & had a real fine view
of Salisbury from there. We had
tea & went to the service at the
Wilton church at 6 pm The day has
been a real nice bright one, a rather
strong southerly wind has been
blowing.
Mon 11th
Spent the day on pioneer
fatigue Went to the pictures in
the evening, the management has
been changed from Albany Ward
to the A N C B & is an
improvement on the old shows.
The old oil engine driving the
electric light plant gave a great
exhibition of fire works at about
9 30 pm
Tuesd 12th
Received photos today
also letter from Lena.
Sat 20th
Packed up and had breakfast
entrained at 10 30 am at Pernois &
passed through Doulton St Poll &
dis entrained at Berquett at &
marched for camp at Lingham
Sund 21st
Went for a route march this afternoon
Took a walk & had tea at Zueners this evening
Tuesd 23rd
Went for a route march
this morning & spent the afternoon
entraining at the salt course.
Wed 24th On line for fatigue this
morning & had the afternoon off.
