Diary of Staff Nurse Christine Erica Strom - 1917-1919 - Part 8

c̄ difficulty but too late for tea. Had
it after lunch. Loafed. Washed. Ironed.
Coal grey dull day. Letter from Melv.
- letters from Victoria yesterday also
[[?]] Male. brought letters from
Dobson, Philbin, Holt. Jeff. Went over
to no 5 C.C. - Miss M. said we were not
to go - but as we walked thro' the 61
to go to their concert we passed an
ambulance they picked us up & took us
to no 5 C.C. Very good show - packed
c̄ the Tommies & [[met?]] the padre. Rained
hard & great confusion prevailed for a
while. Cold night. Cpt. Burke saw us
home though we didnt want him to &
brought us across country - we giggled
and fell into trenches but eventually
arrived back quite successfully.
To bed at the double - had supper &
laughed most so much we had to go
out of the tent in pyjamas & drink
our cocoa in the middle of the
road. Ged. came home late - we
dislike her intensely.
Thurs. Very tired - went to 80th canteen
c̄ S. Wilson & did nothing else the rest
of the day. Supper with S. Wilson while G.
TH. played bridge. Hick. went to 50 [[eveng?]]
Cpt. Burke came.
Fri. Paraded. Have got
another week - don't want it now I've
got it! Did nothing all day - wrote
letters, fooled c̄ & swore at the
primus. Tommie moved in [[8.Wilson?]]
[?] departed - Hick came back 6pm
went to concert at 61 - 2/9 DLI's
Good show. Supper - fruit & cream
& to bed late! Slept well!!!
Sat. Hick went 10 a.m. Tommie moved
into our tent. Loafed - went for a slow
walk after five. Fairly cool. We eat
a lot these days - the supply depôt
[[b?]] still stands in the corner but - it
daily gets more empty.
Sunday. Church 9.20 - good service. Warm
day. Paraded & asked Dr. if I might go
tomorrow but she said that "I must
be patient and as happy as possible" and
stick the week out!
Monday. Gnl. Fetherston came this p.m. -
with very short warning. T & I were in
our tent preparing when he came &
went! Wind up! We went over to 60
double speed - got there pretty tired too
but found the Genl. addressing 60 in
the mess tent. The A.D.C. pushed us
in too - 'Go on', he said when we
protested. 'You're all Australians".
No definite news of anything. Mrs McH.
very "nice" - led us up to Genl. &
told him of our "spirit". Talked c̄
Cpt. Burke & got my films - had
[[?]] on the tennis court &
returned home prepared to [[clinic?]] on the
Genl.! Glee party at 61 - very good. Beautiful moonlight.
Tuesd. Went walking after 6. Cpt
Burke called, had tea & talked. [[Male?]]
came over. Richardson called back to
Australia! All sorts of rumours out about
the Genl! Saw many tortoises & took a snap.
Wed. Went over to lake view in [[?]]
c̄ Tapssy Took snaps donkey team.
Swan came up from 43. Morning tea
in [[?]] tent - a great institution
[[Turvey's?]] primus does all the work
for the camp!- more or less. Orders
out about washing restrictions - shortage
of water all round. Fire on hills at
right of Hortiach Walked up to canteen
which was stock taking -'twas ever
thus! Capt. Bridden & his 3 assistants
over from no 5 - most interesting lecture
on 7 lamps [?] music; and the boys were
great - especially Jepson's voice-
we all fell hopelessly in love c̄ it
& with his beautifully formed face!
Supper & much giggling later in our tent!
Thurs Malv went 8 a.m. - T. & I rose
early (7.30!) & dashed across, were
just in time. Went canteen wards -
got some choc. & very hot. Letter from
Coghlan (proper B.T.) We are very jolly
at table these days. T. paraded but
waits till Sat. for me. Washed &
ironed. Some primus! And some
appetites these days we never seem
to stop. Our photos. taken outside
hut. Tomatoes for Supper!
Friday Hot water today. Bathed 9.30.
Paraded - and tomorrow we
go. Morning tea - ironed, packed,
Warm day. Our tent looked like an
old curiosity shop - has done for
days - guess the G.S. lass will be
glad when we go! We occupy all
four beds, and enjoy freedom!
Topsy a delight - threatens to put her
stars up on her nightie so that
her tent mates will remember her
rank!
Supper and late to bed - we are sorry
to leave the C.C. though glad to be
returning to duty.
Sat. Completed the packing. Bade farewell to
Miss Martin, Pratt & the sisters at 61.
Took snap of "Grannie" McNiel
Car came 10 am nice Jock driver (who
knew [[?]] at 32 MAC) who took
us round town. We both rode on the
front of the car. Much dust. Took
photos. Arrived 42 11.30 - saw
Matron, Scarch, Melv. & the lads.
Got fired up. [P?] assisting went
on duty 3 p.m. B32 & B33 - on
time. 7.30 - wrote letters & did
little. Slept well.
Sunday. Back in A, in though a changed
ward. Cashie Smithie Stevens &
Moyan old hands. Happy day -
tired. Hot sun here & no shelter
Quinine for us nocte. Cashie
doles it out.
Monday. Off 5 pm Don't do much these
days. Letter from Bob. Board on. Cashie
& [[Swindle?]] for it. Much photo. printing
Tuesday off 5 p.m
Wed. } Felt a bit dizzy. Much wind.
Thurs} Guns very active on Dorian
Fri. Rumours of [?]. Boat goes
in a.m. Wrote letters until late &
took them down to the ward. Bade
the troops goodbye. - avec the
electric torch.
Sat. [[??]] last night - got up
early & went down & saw them all.
Got Sashie's [[note?]] afterward
diet book. New diet business
out - a dashed nuisance & lot
of rot. Girls had a good cricket
match c̄ 28 G.H. [[?]] padre C.
back,. Got card from P. Walshe.
Capt Rutherford the limit & he
[[?]] limit certainly. [[?]] going
anywhere near 12 midday.
Sunday B.T. (= bad tempered!) Stunt
still on. Wounded in 28th Greeks &
British. Dull grey day. Off 1-5
& slept.
Monday. Letters from Bobbie, [[Maynard?]]
Cooperson. Cool day. Melv!
bad cold - off duty [[?]] 10 a.m. &
for half day. Rumours about the
stunt.
Tuesday. Went c̄ Search & Bryden
to anti aircraft - & enjoyed it
well. On duty at 5 for all 4
wards, & enjoyed it too. B.T.
tonight! Letter from [[?]].
Wed. Went into Sal. c̄ Lynch in p.m.
no Transport because of stunt up the
line - got lift by the wagon down
as far as Dudular & walked the
rest. Hailed several cars but
c̄ no result. Warm & weary,
dusty and dry! Lynch funny.
as she always is. Called [[?]] & waited
an hour at Ordnance and in vain too
no shoes at least not the reqd. size.
Had long iced limejuices. Walked to
dressmaker and got lift on a French
lorry - very pleasant & polite
French soldats. Picked up Harwood.
Went to [[?]] dressmaker & got the
dresses - also a great welcome.
Many impressions of dirt, disorder
& domestic felicity - also some
black sweet nice coffee served in
Gk style. "Penelope" entertaining.
Walked to [[E.F.C.?]] - Lynch out
the wind up a shop[[?]] very
thoroughly in V. St - pretended to
pinch & pocket his goods. I was
slightly troubled lest they should
apprehend us. Got lift on a R.A.C.
wagon - later picked up by an
ambulance from 28th. & brought
all the way back - melons &
all. It was good to get home as
I at least was a trifle thoughtful
about being in Salonique at
and after sunset! Party at
night - farewell to the 50th
girls I think. Went late c̄ Melv
& wore our new white [[?]]
dresses and played tip it &
grab c̄ the padre &
others & ate much supper since we
had no dinner and someone spilt
coffee on [[?]] dress. We went
to the tent & she changed & then we
returned & saw Archie who was
there c̄ Major & Atley. Did Bry. a
good turn! Retired late.
Thurs. Warm day - letter fr' Cooperson
Fri. Lynch went back to the 50th
how we'll miss her in our tent.
She was funny! McFie moved in.
she is a decided change! Holden
& Jock boarded - how I'll miss the
lads! Twas ever thus. Ryder of A3
(and A7 in March) also goes.
Sat: likewise & also. Letters -
Elsa, Mate, Clifford, Nell &c.
Sunday. Church at night - new padre
plenty of mosquitoes. Visited the
ward & obtained some oil - & put
the wind up the troops.
Monday. Night duty tonight! S.Kent
off to 50. Retired from the scene
midday but did not sleep. On duty
7.30 - same old routine,
same old joys of n. duty,
same old worries concerning
[[?]] & the nonsleepers. No
supper had tea 9 pm, which
Jock made ere he retired. Sleepy
toward the a.m. ah me!
Tuesday. Slept well. The dear old
people fenced my corner off
c̄ rugs & a screen. Very hot-
lay & sweated - sorry perspired
I mean. Peter brings tea at 4 p.m.
- so different from Edments. - &
surprise Lowrie. We got out the
war map & Lowrie pasted it on
calico & now we scan it daily.
& stick pins in the spots which
matter at the moment. [[?]]
does not sleep he's worried about
his mother. Gave films to Freeman.
Wed. Went over c̄ Search & Melv.
& Brydon 5 p.m. to A.A. Section.
Sleepy but enjoyed it. Algie
took [[?]] & we & showed us the
gun & we thought out queries.
On duty two minutes late.
Bray brought my dinner down to
our tent - not in time for mess.
Matron sick. The guns are still
booming away. Melville has a
sore eye (? [[?]]?]] she wears
dark glasses. Letter from Brougham
Maynerd.
Thurs. Holder sat in the Shelter
shed & I spied him about 12 &
we yarned anent guns & so on
& suppered there - oh shades of
rules & regulations. The pow kid
is dreadfully worried. Wrote a
note to Padre concerning a cable.
The boat goes Sat. so they say.
Friday. At 3 a.m. we took the
primus into the bell tent & lit
it after much trying & made some
"char" & drank it & yarned subduedly.
I enjoyed it, & he was cheered
a bit. They drew their kits
today - tonight are greatly busy
c̄ the various contraptions. The H.S.
doesn't go in the a.m. Good job!
Jock printed photos. Had a group
[[?]] this a.m. It is one of my
duties to put out the mess tent
light at 10 p.m. Rotten job! The
padre was playing bridge tonight.
Last night I got the supper or
rather served it out. A rotten
job! Had several laughs &
obtained some buckshee. Was accused
later of not giving Samson enough
milk! Dear, dear! Slept 9-1 only
no sleep at night.
Sat. [[?]] - Caught 17 mosquitoes
in the ward & the bell tent. The BT
faces the wrong way & every
thing blew everywhere. Fine
photos. they travelled some
wind up 3 a.m. - called Jock & he
& Holden helped me c̄ the sides &
end of the marquee, & also did
the B.T. sides. Made tea & drank
it in the BT (oh shades again!)
and yarned, laughed (subduedly)
read & wrote letters for the
Malta mail. Chased photos
Cpl. S. arranged that I could obtain
any supply of any supply from
Ellis the cook - good idea too!
Got 3 tins of milk tonight - the
night Sgt. carried it up while
I carried the kettle contg. the hot
water for [[?]] which I went down
[[?]] all day. Slept well
till 3 when M. woke me c̄
the news that we'd been asked
over to the A.A. depot. xx Got up
reluctantly! Had to [[???]]
which Peter found this a.m. in
the drain & which (of course) had
to be washed "& all". Kept the
T.L. waiting 20 mins. Major has a bad
cold which however did not prevent him from
trying to put some choc. box stuffing down
my back! Great scenes of strife. Aggie
assisting me. Was entertained afterward
by Aggie & the Colonel who wasn't a Col.
at all - after the others left for duty and
[[?]] [[?]] appeared c̄ Atkins. Returned 6.30
minus the toffee! H. troubled & sleepless -
spent part of the early a.n. in the shelter
shed & the rest n the B.T. Rumours about
the H.S. & where she is.
Sunday. Melv. took the troops to church -
Holden went too. Glorious moonlight =-
and again the B.T. Chased mosquitos
c̄ the official test tube but caught only
5 - got 28 the other night! Wrote
letters. Letter from Dobson (Vera)
Monday. More rumours. Spanish flue
bad at Kalamaria. Several girls went
back to 50 & 52. Kal. out of bounds to
us. Bob came the other night - did
I mention that? Brought RAMC badge.
Holden gave me 2 badges. Letters from
Browning, Sgt. Clarke, Walley, John &
several others. Read them late, & wrote
much all night - no sleep! The night
Sgt. in a bad temper and fussed round.
Jock & H. had morning tea c̄ me.
5 a.m. - The lads sang beautifully
last night - they are great lads, especially
in 3.
Tuesday 17th The boat was supposed to
go 2.30 - Melv. has day off
I took her her brekker. [[?]] 1 p.m.
& we went down & bade them fare
well. Took snap c̄ a poor back ground.
Returned to bed & slept. Melv &
Lowrie & McFie on nights too -
Good arrangement really. Guns again
rumours about Serbs [[?]] & L.H. &
the Glousters. Wonder where Dunstan
& Norrie are. The troops didn't go
after all - tomorrow morning early.
Went into see Matron for the first time!!!
Wed. 18th Woke the lads early - got tea
early & oh! horror! wow came round at
5.30 that the boat was cancelled! Much
perturbation. [[?]] & [[fisattion?]]. They got their
breakfast c̄ difficulty but got it. Jock very
fed up! Halden finished dressing in the
B.T. Retired late. Murray called me 2 p.m.
& told me that the boys were off at 2.15 so
down I went & bade them a final farewell
& returned bedward. Note from Affie before
I slept - answered it - & got no sleep at
all. Letters Els & Mate (2) Sisla - June 6th
delayed of course. Missed the lads sadly
but times ever thus!
Thurs. Lyons told me that H. got good news
just before they went. What a providential
delay it was for the lad! Hot days!
Glorious moonlight nights. Plenty
of [[?]] about. Melv. & I sup at
midnight & tea again at 4 a.m. Melv.
has Reveille - very good orderly. Just
knows too much! Spanish flue everywhereBy xxx Search went to 43 c̄ it. Matron
goes shortly to Con. Camp. McFie does
make a row in the early p.m.
Friday Had our names down to go to town in
the car but there was a farewell morning tea
to Rosie in Dawson's tent (all pyjama-ed) and
had photos taken & all that. Bed nearby [[?]]
& slept well. Hot day. Pete sick. Melv.
has Unit ward.
Jack Stewart had the
wind up - 2 a.m.
Took photo of Melv. wards by moonlight.
Claridge took his tea over in early a.m. He has
fixed up the barbed wire fence. Bring Tommy
(my Primus) down to the ward & make ones
char & the troops' (special S.M.) at 4, & the
whichever ward has no [[primus??]] to
make their char with. T. got too hot one
a.m. & the [[?]] welled round his neck
but the troops fixed him up c̄ [[?]]
strapping & [[?]] we were well away.
Sat. Likewise. Cpt [[?]] at the mess
tent at Lights out.
Sunday. Peter woke us up at 3.30 & told us
that there was an "awful shy looking
chap" to see Melville! I guessed it
was Craigie - & of course it was! Got
our kitbags - also various promises
which we don't believe of course.
Letter from Aggie about Monday - M.
didn't want D/o but I wrote finally
persuaded her, and seeing that I got up
("slowly having [[?]] a dress for the
occasion) to help c̄ Craigie I suppose
she felt it was u.t.h. to come. Sent
note over - & gave Aggie "the wire"
concerning "the wife".
Monday. Went over 3.30 & were [[smartly?]]
punctual and were met by Aggie
c̄ the Brilliantine in hand! The Major
behaved (he & Alky have had flu but
are better - Aggie dispenses) & Aggie was
as mad as ever. DId our best (or
worst) to make the door stop squeaking
but only got messy. Saw the
Turkeys. Aggie was top hole
aprés the "wire".
Tuesday } Much the same. Several sisters
} sick - continual supply for 43.
Wed. } Rumours about S2 which did
} not eventuate. Tales that
Thurs } might be true about the Gks.
} Great excitement xx about war news.
Friday. } All transport stopped for the
sisters till the stunt is over. [[?]]
[[?]] continuously some night's. Men down
from the line. A & G.H. 2nd Camerons
2nd Glousters, 12th Cheshires, 7th S.W.B. &
1st Welsh - also 7th Harts were badly
smashed up. Letters from Dobson.
Cooperson (c̄ badge & photos) Waited
until 10 for the car today & told [[?]]
to call us at any time it came. But
nothing was doing. Clarridge rises at
all hours after 1 a.m. and cheers the
night sister up. He & Taffy Evans take
it in turns to take Melvile's tea
to her. Very busy wards all over
the hpl. - tho staff all going sick.
43 full & they say the wounded are
dying by dozens at 52 c̄ pneumonia
Matron back - what a delightful
free week we've had! Sgt. [[?]]
sick - Sgt. Brown comes on. The W,S.
a nice surprise.
Sat. New star out beside Venus in the
early a.m.s. Letters from Else, Wato, [[?]]
Sgt Silk died in A1. More rumours
about 53. The night [[?]] a perfect
treasure - "plenty bucksheee, Johnie"
- but perhaps "Tomorrow finish" hence.
I have a large varied supply on the
bottom shelf. The old Serb. guard
"dobra" -ed beautifully when I came up
to put the lights out.
Sunday. Did not get up for tea - but
defied the convention by
walking past the mess tent in dressing
gown to the bathroom! McFie was
shocked & very timorous but came too.
Bad tempered last night - which is I
suppose nothing new. Great war news -
the troops are [[?]] for the wireless which
they usually [[?]] (more or less authentic)
& they get it in the a.m. c̄ their Sodii
Sulph. Melville very busy. [[wind?]] up
- C. helped me c̄ last walk at 3 a.m.
2 a.m. is the hour when I draw "rations" -
carefully camouflaged c̄ hot water [[?]]
if necessary. It certainly pays to be
careful these days. Rumours that Ellis
may [[??]] - consequently entire [[?]]
up. McFie moved to 52 at very short notice.
Monday Xxx Peace declared here - great
rejoicing, we got the news at brekke &
somehow the very sheep on the hills c̄ their
shepherd seemed infinitely more restful
than before.Parcel from Sgt. Clarke. Silk
& [[?]] Letters from Walley, Dobson.
Tuesday Note from Aggie - 7.45 about
this afternoon. Answered it statim. Got up
3 p.m. & took films & Tommie. Developed
films [[?]] Aggie's tank & the result was
most disastrous - also rather remarkable
the film being developed only in patches.
The [[?]] did Tommie. Played Bumble
puppy c̄ Melv. & c̄ Aggie - exciting.
and dishevelling sort of game. Aggie
[[?]] some appalling manners about
Genl. McKenson (or something like that)
being at Sofia c̄ 5 divisions of Aust.
& Germans. Wind up! We learnt later that
that report was a little exaggerated.
Wed. Felt very tired last night - doesn't
pay to go at much. And Tommie wouldn't
work - leaks badly. T.T. is taking him
down to the lab. Yesterday's visit seeing a
bit of a fiasco, far as results go.
Busy wards - I do enjoy the mornings
from 3.30 - & E. and C. arise & cheer.
Melville very busy - admitting cases
most of night sometimes. [[?]] Super running
temp 102° &c but won't give in. That's
the stuff to fie 'em!
Thurs. Tin Lizzie came for us 2.30 - Dervy
drove. Ordnance E.A.C. & the inevitable
Venezelos St. & bought a fearful lot of stuff.
Dervy and the M.P. nearly had a row at
Ordnance and I thought we were the cause
of the wrath of Dervy because we were
a whole [[?]] at Ordnance - to c
tiresome place whereat to shop. Devon had
several refreshers - we didn't have the
car long after that - though he seemed quite
alright. Chased coloured silks and
embroidery thro' the Turkish bazaar &
found an honest Turk there!!! Called
at the Headquarters on the way home
and gave Aggie the developing powders.
Major affable as usual. Home 6.30.
Had an [[?]] search for a melon.
Jolly tired this p.m. Melville off colour
a bit. Reveille semi-comatose - [[?]]
village. What a life. Spoke to S.M.
brown concerning the wards & the troops
& to the troops concerning Sgt. Brown & the
wards. Got several hard looks and
surprised ones - but it mattereth not.
Search back today - lacks [[?]] on it
The matron on the Markets - [[?]] Gave
me the wire from Observ. - "T.O.D.s which is
code. Munro sick & [[?]] to 43 - very sick
Murray told me something about McT - malaria
+ Spanish flu' which was not [[?]]
to cheer the cockles of mine heart. One
of the V.A.Ds sick - made about
umpteen trips (i.e. 4) up to her tent c̄
hot water bags & drinks & things. Poor
beggar - Must be deadly in a B.Tent
all on ones own like that when are
as sick. Goes to 43 in a.m. c̄ dys.
Started packing up a bit. - didn't get
far. letters from Ware. Cool night.
Saturday. Cold. wet. windy - like H.
of this time last year. Wore my
new brown boots & regretted it at 9 p.m.
& changed into the faithful, but dilapidated
black shoes. Tommy a joy these nights.
More go sick daily & to 43 - also the
staff of the R.A.M.C. Hospital very busy
- sick men down from the line. Rumours
about the fighting. A2 a thorn in the flesh
some nights - which is a pity for there
are some great lads there. Cold night.
[[May?]] got the wind up 12 midnight that
I was not up to scratch - and bade
me sleep till 4 a.m. - gave me a
blanket and many [[injunctions?]]. Slept
2 - 2.30 and then after mistaking
the adjutant for the 1st lieut (a Professor M)
did the perambulating act round the
[[?]] & got warm. Jove it was cold!
Sunday I get these days run one into the
other! Melv. & I went to church 9 a.m.
but we were the only two there - Padre
offered a prayer which was great & xx
sent us bedwards. Rained a bit.
Ructions last night - anent the xxx
idiosyncracies of the N.S. - & apologies this
a.m. The red haired one - I have
turned over a new leaf - the whole of
4, I think assisted in the turning & did
a bit on their own, too.
Monday The other day when M. & I went into Sal.
I did shopping for the lads. Firstly Hally
asked me to get a no 2B. camera. Asked the shop
chap for it & he gave me what was apparently a
no 3B. - also some no 2B films. Got back
& on opening the camera found it was a No 1
Senega - whatever that is! Wind up! but
Melv. persuaded me to keep calm & I told H.
that the make was identical or some such
thing sort of remark & he was quite pleased
c̄ the transaction but wasn't at all
enthusiastic (as he should have been) once the fact
that I knocked the man down from [[?]] to
100 fr. That's the most of having [[?]] money!
Also I got Claridge some soap (at 45
each) and when I made the bill out in the
early a.m. (very early, reminds the counsel
for the defence) I put down 4.5 for
each cake instead of .45 hence the
poor chap got 7 fr. instead of about 16 fr.
change! Later they made investigations
& told me of the damage & we all
shrieked c̄ mirth, & I felt an ass -
Taffy Evans dubbed me a profiteer &
advises me to get into the soap biznez!
I have never heard th elast of that xxx
episode! [[?]] & C. come into the B.T & talk
in the early a.m. - Tommie is already
lit & purrs loudly away, & I didn't
think we made much row but Jock
McKay in 1 "c/o severe row in the
B.Y." (nearly as troublesome as Sgt. [[?]]
"Trouble in Central America" at 4 a.m.)
& Woods & others had to be pacified
& apologised to and so on! Some rain
Tuesday Padre (Presbyt) is sending a
cable home to Dad for me. Hope
he returns the change soon - I have nix!
Letters from Malta - umpteen, Holden,
jack & crowds more. Rain today - &
heavily tonight. Washed thro the marquee
floor in early a.m. & damped the
troops spirits & clothes of the latter were
on the floor - & if the former were easily
damped. The camp seems all trenches
& tent pegs on dark nights. Hate going up
to put the light out. Melv. came c̄ me
tonight. Her torch went bung & she has mine.
Nurses very sick ill indeed. Several more of
the sisters down c̄ flu & away to 43. We hadxxxx 1418 patients & staff of 52 - which is
the most unequal popn we've ever had.
The mess orderlies sent to wards & L.C.
men in mess. Queer looking chaps. S. Giddings
does the cooking - we miss the good old
cook & his buckshee jam! Ellis supplies
the wards c̄ jam nightly. Also the sister c̄
tea + other necessities. Got caught (almost)
last night. Sgt. B. waited in front of the door while
I walked out another. The tins of milk
wobble very audibly, no matter how slowly
I walk along. Jarrett back & on N.D. - sleeps
in our tent. Much rain at night.
Wednesday. Munro on the D.I. & not expected to
live. Has pneumonia & malaria - which seems
a hopeless complication combination. Taff Evans
& Davey & Parkey for H.S. - ? when it goes.
Packet from Dabbie & Larkey for Halder.
Clear cold starry night c̄ early moon. Melv.
does D & O + Unit. [[?]] jolly sick - has
a rotten cough, & runs a temperature. C. & E.
take turns c̄ the [[teas?]] at 4 a.m. There has been
some fuss about the afternoon tea - S.G. decided
that the orderlies could just have one tray
here & there & we decided otherwise - hence the
fussation. There are sufficient orderlies. [[?]]
won the day - & Peter brings the tea daily,
leaves the tray & we pour out: which means
buckshee biscuits for afternoon tea. N. Super
nearly caught me raiding! M.O. was O.O. & had
tea c̄ us in the B.T. at 10 p.m. - she doesn't
moderate her tones sufficiently for that hour. Woodie
remarked in a.m. that she was a noisy old
lady!
Thursday. Oct 10th. Munro died last night. It
seems hardly believable. We
all feel that this is the beginning of the end as
it were. D.D.M.S. very concerned about the staff
here & no. of patients - & all convoys are
stopped. We've been getting 40 in a night some
times from the line & all pretty sick. Most
went to observation. Family very depressed
all round, & very tired looking.
Friday. Clear sunny days - cool & breezy. Took
photo. of Taff & all our luggage. He & C.
came up to the top [[?]] "in t' morning" and
