Letters from George Alexander Hugh Murray to his family, 1918 - Part 2

& the papers are passed around.
These last few days have been the coldest
for the whole winter but compared with
this time last year it is glorious
weather for hardly a day goes by
without having a glimpse of the
sun Very few frosts so far & very
little rain
In a couple of days there will be another
parcel on the way home for I send one
whenever i get the time chance
but Mum said she received none
last year So a few of my pounds
have gone to the bottom of the sea
Well I have to say So Au Revio
Hoping you are well and all at home
the same
Your loving brother
George.

Dear Bob
I received your ever welcome
letter a couple of days
ago along with one from Mum
& Doll but I put off answering
them for I have not been
too well. I get coughing fits
caused by the gas that I got
in a gas attack not very
long ago. I have tried a lot
of things to ease the coughing
but so far I have not succeeded
to any extent
I had a letter today from
Tina & she was telling me
that she had passed her
final exams so I suppose
she will be trying to come
20
overhere but four is a lot out
of our little lot but what is
to be will be.
I have not heard from or seen
Les for a long time though I
write often
I met Norman Colley a few
days ago The first time since
I met him when in the
Manchester Hospital in 1915
& hardly
He has altered a lot & hardly
knew me
Today I sent a parcel to
Mum costing about 25/- I
hope it gets home alright
for I have sent many &
they do not seem to get
home
It is very cold & well on towards
bed time So l will sign off hoping
all at home are in the best
of health. Received the cake. Is
that the parcel you are refering to
So Au Revoir

Dear Het
I received yourmost wh welcome
letter today and the day before
yesterday received the diary but
have not read it through yet but
in one place I noticed where
you dreamt that you had a
letter from Gens down lucky stand.
funny dream but how wish it
were true but now I hold out
very little hope for him
Who made the poetry about the
family fits in very well. When
heard the history through Lovell
try & find Les & give it to
him and he can keep it or give
it back to me but Iwill have
to return it for most likely
it would get lost for Iwould have
to have it in my pack when
go into the Line
By now you will be well settled
down with your flock again
I am very sorry to hear about
Charlie Dougheay for it will be a
great landing to him for he was so
keen on sport but now that is
all at an end
Funny weather you had for Christmas
Just fancy having to have a fire.
Will we could do not with one bat
a dozen about Christmas for we
were living under canvas & between
snow frost rain & cold winds
we put in a most delightful
Christmas Do not want another
like it
Yes Lena wrote and told me the
she had passed all her exams
Isuppose she will think now of
joining the forces
Well I am about can day so
Iwill say AU Revoir
Hoping you are quite well

Dear Het
I received your most welcome letter
a few days ago & yesterday I got two
Warrach papers which when I read I
passed on to the other local chaps in the
company
Up till early this morning we have
been having lovely sunny weather
not the like the winter last year
but now it has turned very wet
I suppose too much heavy artillery
fire for it has been very severe It
times
You will be well settled at your
school again & looking forward to your
next holidays. I hope to have some
before long & a long one into the
bargain for by all accounts the
men who left in 1914 are getting a
trip home I hope it is true for Icould do
with another sea voyage
I have not seen or heard from Les &
have not much chance of looking for
him. When Ifind him will give him
the diary that you sent me which Ihave
read. Very interesting
Last night Liret Fea Harris from Belala
Beulah. The second time in France
Alex Horner is with him but I have
not met him yet
I have a very crook arm I had to get it
lanced then it began to swell so now I
have to have hot foments on it every
few hours
Well I must now close hoping you
are quite well
I am your loving Brother
George
