Letters from George Alexander Hugh Murray to his family, 1916 - Part 11
for their crucifixes
for at every cross road
& over every grave in
the cemetry you will
see them
Well Lena I have
nothing much say
so lets pray that all
may be spared to meet
in the near future
I Remain
your loving Brother

All at home
I have received
a few letters from you
since last writing also
a Waratah paper with
a letter from Neil & Ray
Marchant.
The other day I was
walking along a road
behind the line when I
met Charlie Macginnes
& he did look well but
he had not much time
to spare so I had not
much of a talk with
him.
I also met J. Peverill
& S. Tyard & saw J.
Horne at a distance
The weather is getting
very cold & wet &
up to date there
has been one fall
of snow but it did
not last long but some
of the frosts have been very
severe, ice lasting on water all
day long
I will write a longer letter
all being well when I get
back into billets again so I
will close
I remain
your loving Brother & Son

All at home
I received
five letters by the
last mail one from
Bess, Will Kingston &
three from you so will
try to answer them
tonight but I can
hardly hold the pen
for my hands are
dreadfully cold & I
have toothache into
the bargain & out it
comes at the first
chance.
I cannot make out what
has come over Jim, you
say you cannot get a
line from him, well I
am in the same plight
for I write again &
again but cannot get
a reply & none of the
letters are returned so I
do not know what to
think
I will mention again
that I received the
registered letter alright
in case you did not
receive the other one
Not long ago I had
a short letter from
A. Gunn. He said it
was very cold & that
3
there was plenty of snow
though there has only
being one slight fall
here up to datethogh though it has
come very near
it at times
The New Year will be
well on its way by
the time you receive
this & winter here
will be at its worst
so one has something
to face & to look
forward to & shudder
Tell Lena that I received
her parcel xxx but
the glass was cracked
before I received it
Well I cannot think
of any thing more this
time
So will close
With fondest love from
Your son

By the last mail
I received six letters
a paper & a parcel
from Lena & latter
on a registered letter
with the five pound
note is which I thank
you for but I did not
really need it for I
have just sent you a
remittance for £40 which
I hope will reach you
in due course. I had
that amount on my
pay book & it was
2
doing no good there so
I thought you may as
well have it.
This will be my third
X mas away from Aust.
& as far as is known
we will be just be
out for & it for we
have just been three
weeks in the line but
had a very fair time
no casualties to
speak about but the
cold weather played
up with the chaps
feet for some of them
swoll up to a terrible
size but that was
nothing compared to
