Letters from George Alexander Hugh Murray to his family, 1916 - Part 10
France
17/11/16
Dear Lena
I have not heard
from you for some time
now but I do not suppose
it is your fault for Hett
told me that you are
nursing some severe
cases in the Hospital.
I have just had a
couple of letters from
home one from Bess
and one from Mr Naismith
and last night I had a
letter & parcel from LInda
March
There is nothing I can say
for it is the same
one day after an other
and we are never in
any big towns only
small dirty villages
and some times deserted
and not smelling too
good either but one
has to take the good
with the bad
I see by the papers that a fair number
of Warrack chaps have given up their
lives
By the time you receive this it will
be Xmas time & with it my third
away from home
I have nothing more to write
about this time
So Au Revoir
From Your loving Brother
George

All at home
I just received two
letters from you one from Lena
& another from Bess, while
last night I received a
parcel & a letter from LInda
and I am trying my best
to answer all them this
afternoon
I could not believe my eyes
when I read one of your
letters about the Warrack
chaps that T have given
their lives for their country
2
I knew months ago that
Blanchard was badly wounded
but I never knew that
he had since died & I
saw Stan Deane death in
one of the papers that
I read.
I know that Hughes that
you were telling me about
He is a stretcher bearer
in his company
I write every week to Jim
& Les but never receive
an answer so it is up to
them to give me their
correct addresses which
we are not allowed to post
in our letters for if we do it is only
scratched out by the sensor
You will be having plenty of sunlight
now which it may for days we
never see a ray of sunlight & it
gets dark about five & lights close
on eight next morning so what must
it be like in the shortest day
I have nothing much to write
about this time so farewell
close hoping you are
all well wishing you
all a Merry Christmas &
Happy New Year
From you loving son
& Brother George

Dear Lena
Now that I have
some time to spare I will
write to you for from now
for a long time I shall
have no chance of
writing so here goes.
I just had a letter from
Bess & one from Charles
Georgeson xx [[Carthmiss?]] but
not a line from Les or
Jim. I cannot make out
why they do not write,
though I always write to them
Today it is raining &
very cold into the
bargain but as I have
nothing to do I am
still in bed close on
dinner time.
Long before you receive
this Les & I will have
left Aust over two years
but I do not feel
the time long for I have been
in so many different places
& seen so many historical
places, even to be on the
ground where the Waterloo
was fought & being in
many old Roman camps
The people here are great ones
