NOVEMBER 1917
15 Th Withdrew from
outpost at 730 went
in & watered up at
Diran, left about 1.30
& proceeded to Ramleigh
which had been evacuated
by the Turks rode
through the village which
contained some fine buildings
came on to Ludd & Camped
the night: (on picquet).
16 Fri
Left Ludd early & proceeded
to Safiyre where we
watered up & stayed the
night plenty of oranges
about: very chilly night
1917 NOVEMBER
17 Sat Stayed the day with Squadron
rained a little during day
Left Safiyre with 3rd Reg
18th went out on a reconnisance
stayed in olive grove
& went back to Ludd
to water the nags came
back to Safiyre then
proceeded onto Yazur
camped the night
19th Sun
Rained heavily during
morning, in camp till
4pm & then went out on
outpost 4 miles with 3rd
Regt cruel night rained
incessantly :
Two Jacko's gave themselves
up in camp.
NOVEMBER 1917
20th 19 Mon
Still threatening rain, windy
rained during afternoon
relieved by 1st Regt about
5 Pm. proceeded back to
Yazur & rejoined Squadron
rained again before we
got back : big mail in
(17 letters) (in picquet)
201st Tu
Very cold ; proceeded back
to Yebna and camped
the night. passed through
some beautiful country
& lanes of a kind of wattle
which had a beautiful
scent.
Cruelly cold night

Left Yebna at 8.30 and
proceeded to back to
Esdud through Bulani
Camped the night
Very chilly.

Cold morning usual
routine, Lemon still lame
lads came over from 1st
to see me.
24 Sat
Chilly again in morning
took horses down to beach
& had swim, very
chilly going in but beautiful
once in
Went over to 1st to see some
of the boys

Beautifully clear day
Church parade but
"slipped" going
26 Mon
Usual routine preparing
to move up again

Left Warrifyre about
7.30 & proceeded right
through to Ay^un Kara
then after watering up
we proceeded to camp
within ½ mile of the town
28 Wed
Usual routine, bought
some brown bread & swapped
cocoa for menagerie of all
sorts.
Got some Canteen stuff
from Belah.

29 Th
Still at Ay^un Kara, took
horses out grazing in
morning.
30 Fri
Usual routine
Beautifully clear
night Taubes
out & poured
M.G. into our
line. No damage

Got news of move
& left camp 12 & proceeded
to Jaffa with
1st Regiment

Arrived at 2.30 am.
"Stood to" at 4 am.
Changed camp position
Camped in orange
orchard; good concert
at night in town -
did not go.
6 Th
Still at Jaffa; usual
routine. Saw all
the Coys.

Rained at Stand to
& kept going all
day off & on, left
Jaffa at 5 P.M. &
proceeded back to
Ayun Kara arriving
at 9 30 still raining.

Raining in early
morning, & continued
all day
Jerusalem fell.

Wrote Nos 9 [shorthand]

Church parade
in evening got
word of move into
trenches
Mail in got 19.

17 Mon
Preparing to move to
Melubis got ready & moved at
3 30, & took over from K O. 5 Bs after
dark; did shift on gun.
Position pretty exposed & Jacko
quite close; very shallow
trenches.
Horses went back to
Ayun Kara.
18 Tu
Quiet day; made our
Bivvy; did shift on
gun at night; commenced
to rain in early
morning.
1917 DECEMBER
19 Wed
Rained very heavily;
got absolutely washed out
Had to reconstruct bivvy
altogether; everything saturated;
went across
to 2nd Regt HQ with message
Turks sent 6 Whizz-Bangs
into our camp
in afternoon, but no
damage done. Did shift
on gun
20 Th
Showery & fine alternately
Infantry attacked on our
left, taking positions
& 150 prisoners;
Very heavy bombardment
DECEMBER 1917

On outpost during day
Turks put over some Whiz
Bangs. on our pozzy
Infantry attacked Bald
Nob; capturing it
2nd Regt taking over
very few casualties
Got 3 parcels,
22 Sat
Infantry attacked on
our right; Turks retreating
in full strength; Infantry
advanced about 3 miles
Artillery giving them
'gippo'
We did not move up but
"stannall" on old post
& had a "night in"

23 Sun
Stayed at Redoubt till
about 3.30 & the
horses came up
& relieved us; & we
went back to
Ayun Kara; very
muddy trip.
Arrived about dark
24 Mon
Stayed at Ayun Kara
wet & windy got
some War Chest Fund
gift stuff & a few
parcels
