With the Brigade Major (Pain)
visited 36" 34" & 35 Bns. Machine
Gun Coy and Transport Snow
thick and freezing hard. Impossible 
for horses, so walked.
Lecture by Sir Robert Lodge in
afternoon. General Sir John Monash
attended. afterward had confidential
discussion principaly. regards
General Rosenthal in connection with
his movement to 1st Div and
my own position in command
of 9' Bde.

Rapid thaw during night.
With Brigade Major visited
33d Bn and Ballieul
Meeting of Commanding Officer's
at Brigade Headquarters chiefly
reference discipline in afternoon.

Warmer - thaw continues.
Bde staff photoed by press
photographer. Major Massy
paraded Capt Yates Latter full
of frivolous grievances Wanted
to run Signallers seperately
from Brigade school and to
drill with out Gas Helmets.
Told him that Major Massy
was in command of school and
he was to obey orders.

Visited Bde School.

General Rosenthal returned 10. p.m.

to relieve General Walker at

1s Div.

General Rosenthal proceeded to

command (temporarily) 1st Division

I delivered opening address to

student Brigade school in morning

Then inspected transport lines.

Heavy snow during night.

Saw Col. Martin 34" Bn

Inspected 34",35" and 36" Battalions

Lunched at 35' Bn Headquarters.

saw 35 in column of route in

marching order. Fine turnout

General Birdwood called while I

was out.

Received Defence Scheme.

satisfied. suggested reduce school

term to 6 instead of 8 weeks

In morning inspected Brigade School

at work on outpost scheme not

over satisfied. Work rather sloppy

Lecture by Gen Sir John Monash

to all officers Brigade in afternoon

Major General White present.

In afternoon Army demonstration

platon gave demonstration at

Bde School. Generals Monash,

White and Rosenthal present.

also Cols Jess and Jackson

from Div. staff..

In evening dined at Corps Headquarters

at FLÉVE. General White

was host General Birdwood was 

away. Took Major Pain with me

back 9.30. p.m.

24 JEUDI.

Going through Court of Enquiry

proceedings re Passchendaele

retirement.

Maj. General Rosenthal rang up

say Major Massy had complained

of not receiving encouragement. Paraded

Massy in evening. He completely

crumpled up, and had nothing to

say beyond that he had no complaint

to make.

Saw 35t march past in column

of route Looked well.

Major Blacklaw dined at Bde

Hqrs in evening.

To Bde Schl. in morning.

Reviewing proceeding Passchendaele

Court of Enquiry.

In afternoon inspected Guard

Mounting 36' Battalin.

Rode over to 35th in afternoon

They had a football match and 

a hockey match (officers) also were

playing a football (soccer) against

Division. General Monash there.

Had long talk with him.

Moved 34' Bn to Bulford

Camp.

Church parade in morning

Held conference of Battalin

Commanders in afternoon

34" Bn relieved Neuclus garrin

in Corps line.

To Brigade school in morng.
