has shown them where the fairies are supposed to dwell.
The boy and girl visit the fairy glen to which the
Goblin King has also been invited. The Fairy Queen
endeavours to prove the wondrous power of fairy charms and

NOTES OF CONFERENCE AT AUSTRALIA HOUSE ON 8.7.19.
PRESENT:- Minister of Defence; Generals Birdwood, Monash and
Griffiths; Lieut.-Colonel R. E. Jackson, and Mr. McBeath.
The proposals of the Director-General of Demobilisation
of 23.6.19, which had been submitted to the Minister, were taken
into discussion.
The Director-General stated that the principle he wished
to assert was that of the merging of the Departments of the
A.I.F. into one Department under a Brig.-General, at some to
be determined date. He had himself proposed October
31st, but the actual date depended upon a more detailed investigation
of the rate at which Branches could be extinguished.
Lieut.-Colonel Jackson submitted a statement showing
the proposed rate of dispersal of the Branches of A.I.F. Headquarters.
The Minister criticised the various items in detail.
He expressed the view that War Records, Records, Central
Registry and Pay could be reduced at a greater rate than
thus foreshadowed.- General Griffiths concurred that this
could be done.
After considerable detailed discussion it was agreed
that the process of reduction should be speeded up all over
with a view to aiming at such a rapid reduction that amalgamation
of all the Departments of the A.I.F. under a Brigadier-General
could be undertaken by September 30th.
The Director-General undertook to re-cast his proposals
and make them more specific, and submit them after consultation
with, and through, the G.O.C. A.I.F.
The Director-General asked that steps might be taken
to expedite the demobilisation of the Graves Detachment in
France.- This was agreed to.
The Director-General submitted that steps should now
be taken, after due notice in the press, to strike off all men
Absent Without Leave.- This was agreed to.
The G.O.C., A.I.F., concurred that on or after July
31st the A.I.F. Depots in U.K. could be reduced to a Brigadier-General's
command, leaving General McGlinn in charge.
General Griffiths undertook to furnish the Director-General
in three or four days time with a revised estimate
of the rate at which Branches of Adminaust could be reduced.

Notes on "Draft of History of Dept."
Schema, as drafted, is generally approved, & the
work of drafting the matter may go on.
I particularly desire the adoption of a fluent, easy
literary style, dealing with the spirit rather than
with the letter of the subject matter. An absence of
pedantry or wearisome detail. - In the language of
art, it is rather the "color scheme" rather than the "drawing"
which should receive most attention.
Dry statistics & matter necessary to record, but likely to be
wearisome reading, should be relegated to a
series of Appendices, which can be referred to in the
Text.
It will be necessary, before any writing is done, to
estimate carefully the extent of each chapter, & to
limit the writer to a definite number of words.
It is essential that the final editing must be done
by one individual, to prevent a patchwork
of styles. - Could not Chapter VI be written by
one man, upon notes supplied by the others? -
All writers should keep in view fundamental matters of interest
Such as (a) initial difficulties & how they were overcome.
(b) possible alternative methods & why they were
rejected.
(c) external conditions which compelled the
courses adopted.-
Everyone must write with an eye to the future critic, &
try to anticipate him, without erring in the direction of
premature defensive.
