A considerable number of members of the A.U.F., employed on Staff of Units in the field, on unit Cadoes, and on the staff of Depots in France and England, of Administrative and Demobilization Readuasters and services, and elsewhere, have hithesto been unable to take advantage of such facilities. he time is approaching when as such duty personnel can be consid¬ & July in number -erably reduced (those in France during May and Trune, and those and ansst. in England during Tine wterly r August 4. Immediate steps will now be taken by all Commanders and by Heads of all Departments to ascertain to what extent the members of their Staffs and other duty personnel desire to submit applications to non such employment -military employment to be undertaken as and when the applicants military senrces can be dispensed with. 5. The grant of all kother applications for now military employment will be, hereafter, govened by the following conditions:- kis (a) All applications must be lodged by this Department by Jue 30. No such applications received after that date will be considered. (6) No application should be submitted untess the applicant can be released from his military duties before July 31.- The date by which he can be released must be stated on the application Form (A.I.F. Form 540) in reply to pavn 7f thereof, & certified to by the Applicants military Commander a Departmental Head. (It will tacilitate the administration of these Instructions if the earliest possible date of such release is stated in each case) (c) No grant of now-military employment will be made which would at eatest except in very special cases involve such employment after Oct 317- By that date all resonnel undergiing now-military employment must become available to repatriation to Austratia I

1. The granting of applications for non-military employment (vide General

Instructions No 5 Annexure B) has been hitherto ^been regulated by the 
principle that it can only be granted ^made only to those who can be spared from
their military duties, and for whom no military employment is available. -
2. A considerable number of members of the A.I.F., employed on Staff of
Units in the field, or Unit Cadres, and on the sStaff of Depôts in France
and England, of Administrative and Demobilisation hHeadquarters and
sServices, and elsewhere, have hitherto been unable to take advantage
of such facilities. -
3. The time is approaching when all such duty personnel can be considerably
reduced ^in numbers those in France during May and June ^& July and those
in England during June July and August. ^and August.
4. Immediate steps will now be taken by all Commanders and by Heads
of all Departments to ascertain to what extent the members of their
Staff and other duty personnel desire to submit applications for non-military
employment ^such employment to be undertaken as and when the applicant's

military service can be dispensed with. -

5. The grant of all further applications for non-military employment will
be, hereafter, governed by the following conditions: -
(a) All applications must be lodged by with this Department by June 2530. 30 June 30.
No such applications receied after that date will be considered
(b) No application should be submitted unless the applicant can be

released from his military duties before July 31. - The date

by which he can be released must be stated on the application

form (A.I.F. Form 540) in reply to para 7 thereof, & certified to

by the applicant's Military Commander or Department Head.

(It will facilitate the administration of these Instructions if

the earliest possible date of such release is stated in each case)

(c) No grant of non-military employment will be made which would

involve such employment after Oct. 31., ^except in very special cases - By thisat date ^at latest all

personnel undergoing non-military employment must become

available for repatriation to Australia.

6. The conditions stated in para. 5 will apply hereafter to all

7. Any member of the A.I.F. who cannot ^in the interests of the service be released from military duty

8. The provisions of these regulations will also be applicable, in principle,

to applications made by duty personnel for "Discharge elsewhere

than in Australia", and for "Extended Leave without pay"; but all

such applications there will be no conditions as to dates, and

each case will being considered on its merits, having regard to the date

when made must be lodged before Aug. 31, stating the date from which

it is desired that the application should take effect.
