Fenruary 11, 1919,
To Lieutenant General John Monash,
Australian Expeditionary forces,
Paris, France.
Dear Sir:-
In behalf of the Mid-day Luncheon Club I desire to invite
you to visit Springfield as the guest of our organization, at a time
convenient for you, in the event of your passing through the United
States on your return-to Australia.
The Mid-day Luncheon Club is composed of a group of the
most representative men in the intellectual and industrial life of
of the community, including state and city officials, who meet at
the noon hour for discussion of topics of general interest.
We would esteem it a most delightful privilege to have
you meet with our organization. We would like to arrange a noon
luncheon in your honor at which we would have present a large
gathering of representative men and women of the community. In the
event of your passing through Chicago, Ill., it would be but a
short trip from there to this city.
An especial reason why you might wish to visit Springfield
is that, besides being the capital city of Illinois, it is
the home and last resting place of the immortal Abraham Lincoln.
In the event of your coming here we would arrange for a pilgrimage
to the tomb of Lincoln and other places of historic interest.
During the present season we have had as the guests of
our organization the members of the Greek Mission to the United
States, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels, Major General
Emilio Guglielmotti of the Italian army and Count Ilya Tolstoy.
Hoping that we might be favored with your presence in
the historic city of Springfield, I have the honor to be,
respectfully yours,
Elmer J Kneale
Secretary.
