My Dear Monash
Before leaving the Amiens area, I called on you
not only to say 'Au revoir' but to thank you personally for
your kind letter of August 20th. I appreciate very much
the sentiments therein expressed. It is a pleasure for
me to say, Monash, that there are no troops who have given us
as loyal and effective support as the Australians, and I am
sure I speak for all Canadians when I say that we would like
to finish the war fighting side by side with you.
I would like to add an especial word of thanks to
your Staff for the great help they were to us. My B.G.,G.S.
has several times spoken to me about the assistance he received
from Blamey, while my Chief Engineer has been most out-spoken
regarding the help he received from your C. E.
I congratulate you most cordially on the success you
have had in the last few days. As you no doubt know, it did
not take us very long to get into the thick of it here. We
have been at it now for two days and have got in a little over
ten thousand yards. We have several strong lines to break
before we get to anything like open warfare. The Fresnes-Rouvroy
line and the Queant-Drocourt line are most formidable
obstacles.
Once more let me thank you for your kind letter and
for your good wishes, which I most cordially reciprocate.
Yours ever
A W Curry

Principal Chaplain,
G.H.Q.
Chaplain (4th Class) the Rev. J. DANGLOW is the
Jewish Chaplain for the Australian Imperial Force in France,
located at Headquarters Australian Corps, which consists of
five Divisions, in addition to the usual Establishment of
Corps Troops. As there are members of his faith in
practically every unit of this Force, it is almost an
impossibility for him to perform his duties with any degree
of satisfaction or success unless he can be provided with
some means of transport.
I understand that it is customary to appoint a Jewish
Chaplain to an Army only, and to provide him with a Motor
Car in order that he may perform his duties with the various
Corps within the Army. If this be correct, there would be
no objection from an A.I.F. point of view to the Rev.
DANGLOW undertaking the additional duty of Jewish Chaplain
to the other Corps of the Army in which the Australian Corps
may be included, if approval can be given for a Motor Car being
placed at his disposal, which would thereby make a Jewish
Chaplain available for another Army if one has already been
appointed to the Fourth Army.
In the event of this proposal being approved, the
provision of a Motor Car and driver therefor would be a
charge against the Australian Government under the
ordinary existing arrangements.
I should be glad to know whether this suggestion
is acceptable.
Sgd W. R. B
General,
Commanding Australian Imperial Force.
Dear Sir John
Please see. I'll let you know
the result.
Yours
T H, Doulls
