29th August, 1918.
The following despatch has-been received by the High Commissione
for Australia from Mr. C. E. W. Bean, Official War Correspondent
with the A.I.F. In France ;—
War Correspondents' Headquarters,
France, August 29th.
Australian infantry at the moment of writing are about two
miles from the outskirts of Peronne, The town itself lies across_
the Somme. The Germans, whose tirement was hastened by the taking
of Frise and Foucaucourt, cannot be expected to allow the Somme crossings
to go without heavy fighting. Indeed it is possible that they will
attempt to stand permanently on the eastern side of the river in
order to keep this obstacle between him and our tank. The next step
in the retirement would be the Hindenburg line. The most important
fact in the present situation is that the British are already through
a part of this great system opposite Arras and are now facing the
Drocourt-Queant switch line, running due north from Bullecourt, which
was built by the Germans in order to provvide against a break through
during the Bullecourt-Arras Battles, but which was not then reached
by us.
Australians yesterday and last night kept close on the heels
of the Germans, never permitting the enemy to get out of touch.
Yesterday afternoon Victorians made a regular attack on
the village of Fries, south of the Somme which was holding up the
advance, and took the village and captured a hundred prisoners.
The Germans generally appeared to be fighting harder on the high
ground near the angle of the river in the north, than on the southern
flank.
North of the Somme a certain commander reconnoitring with
an engineer ahead at his men was nearly shot by a German machine gun.
the Australian infantry to the north of the Somme is new on the outskirts
of Hem. Germans captured here say they had orders to withdraw
fighting. · South of the river, where many parties of Germans were
seen running away along the canal bank yesterday evening, Australian
infantry have now captured Feuilleres, Herbecourt, Flaucourt, Assevillers,
Barleus and Belloy, and are already near the outskirts of
Vlllers-Carbonnel, where the road turns off towards Peronne.
At Barleux they are within a little over a mile
from the Somme Canal. When "the canal" is mentioned in
these despatches, it generally refers to the Somme canal.
The Somme river used to flow through the valley in a series
of lagoons and marshes, about a mile in width. These flats
have been largely reclaimed, and the river now runs in a
canal upheld by weirs and locks for purposes of navigation,
the lagoons being less extensive than formerly, and a large
part of the flats new being low-1ying pasture land. .
The Germans have lately blown up several uf the
locks almost emptying the higher reaches of the canal. The
Australian corps has now recovered 125 square miles of
country and nearly 40 villages, most of which however are in
ruins.
