SPECIAL ORDER
By Lieut. =Gen. Sir John MONASH,
K.C.B., V.D.,
Commanding AUSTRALIAN Corps.
HEADQUARTERS

Sanitation.
Reports received from Sanitary Sections show that there are still
a number of units in which proper sanitary supervision and precautions
against disease are neglected.
It is not creditable that after four years of War Sanitary Sections
should be necessary at all, and that units still require instruction in the
constructions and maintenance of latrine seats, grease traps, etc.
Every Commanding Officer, who claims to be efficient, should now be his
own Sanitary Inspector and should require no teaching or assistance in
sanitary matters.
The war against flies and disease has to be carried out more
thoroughly than is at present the case, and the Corps Commander
will regard every Commanding Officer, who is reported for keeping his
camp or kitchen in a dirty condition, as unfit to retain his command.
To make this effective, the Officers Commanding Sanitary Sections have
been directed to report bad cases of neglect direct to the D.D.M.S.,
AUSTRALIAN Corps, for the information of the Corps Commander.
The following units were reported during July as specially bad.
The Officers Commanding these units were apparently content to have
their men living under filthy conditions:---
55th Battalion, A.IF. | 12th Battery, A.F.A. |
4th Aust. Div. Sig. Coy., A E. | 17th Battalion Water Supply Unit, A.IF. |

-------------------------------------
The following is a translation of an order of the 1st Bn., 414th
R.I.R., dated August 15th, 1918 captured at GOYENCOURT, by the
French. Sufficient copies are being forwarded for distribution
down to Battalions:
1. "The garrison of the advanced zone must be disposed of in
such a manner as to give the enemy the illusion that the old line of
principal resistance is still being held with the same effectives.
"The lack of men must be compensated by particularly great
activity and mobility. The command of advanced "Groups" must,
before all, be very mobile, and for this purpose the best men must
be chosen.
2. "The withdrawal to the new principal line of resistance
must be made step by step, remaining in constant contact with the
enemy, and at every available point the longest resistance must be
offered.
3. "Every man in the battalion must be convinced that I am
perfectly aware of the deplorable state of my troops. I have taken
full notice of it, and have advised the Higher Command to the best
of my ability.
"I have explained that the excessive exhaustion of my men
is an immediate danger for the sector they are holding. However,
our duty towards our country demands that we should make our last
efforts to accomplish the heavy task which has been assigned to us.
Every man must remember that the country is at present in the greatest
danger, and that we have been called to avert this danger from
her."
