In reply to NZ G 132 I thank the GOC
for his kind Enquiries; myself and staff feel
a little rested, but there was a good deal
of work to do yesterday in Co-ordinating our
action with that of the Staff of the Marine
Brigade.
As regards the troops, the whole of those belonging
to the 4th Infty Bde were still heavily engaged
till a late hour last night in actual fighting,
with the exception of 16th Bn which since noon
yesterday has been resting and reorganising. During
the darkness last evening portions of the 13th & 15th Bns
were relieved for reorganization, but at the moment of
writing the following Troops are still in the occupied
positions unrelieved viz the whole of 14th Bn, 1 Coy 15th Bn
and 1 Coy 13th Bn.
With regard to the Troops who gained & occupied
advanced positions the night before last, there were left
unsupported on their left by the withdrawal of the Otago Bn and
unsupported on their right by the falling back of the 16th
Bn, which had been shelled out of its position by our
own Batteries, and as Col Burnage (13th) was
Suffering losses during the day and no
Support could be sent him during the Day and
Bn General Trotman decided to withdraw

troops under cover of the darkness last evening
The troops withdrawn consisted of portions of
13th and 15th Bns and are now being rested and
fed in the valley.
