A- SOLDIERS: LIFE

1

Some people think it glorious

Some people think it grand.
To Join the ranks of a Soldier

And Keep step to the Band
2.

At first it was not so bad

At least twas not for. me

But very soon we got tired

of the damned Monotony.
3
And when we got on desert Sand

Marching day by day
And the Motto is work like Hell

And never think of play.
4.
The Colonel raid to Keep Fit
If you want to be a man
But with all this marching
I - dont see how we can
5
For A marching in the morning
It marching all day long
Some come home swearing
Some singing a song.
6
Then when we get home at five
We are fairly taken back
For the Colonel raid at seven. 'Men'.
We go out to Bivouac
7
Then you should hear the prayers

We offer up for Dad
Of, Course a Soldier always pray's
For they say that cursing Bad
8
I think that I will finIsh now
As the Bugle gone for tea
But if ever they want men again
they can go to Hell for me

The Roll. Call
We have tendered the Toll. We have paid the price
We have braved and battled and bled.
And set in the Shrine of our brothers in Arms
Are the names of Australia's dead.
We have given our share that goes of the grist.
That goes to grind in the War Gods. Mill
But every place that another has left
Is a place that you can Fill
OH. some were Killed in the open boats
Before they had time to land.
And some were Killed in the Rally and Rush
Across. the Sloping sands
But whether they died in the breaking Surf
or whether they died on the Hill
Yet every gap in the ranks this day.
is a gap that you can Fill
You scan the scroll of our sacrifice
And you hope the list will end.
Ere you feel the throb. that tears your heart
And it "poor old Bob. I Knew him well.
Or - Bill - My God! Not Bill
And every place that a pal has left = Is a
place that you can fill = Do you remember
the day they. left. - That Day they passed
through town & When the Bayonets
glanced like a spray of steel & on a
river of rolling Brown - And now in
the same old town today there are
slackers who are slacking still
All blind to the fact that the place that is left.
Is the place they're - got to Fill The far off
note off a bugle Call-And the beat of a
distant drum. Tell not the tale of the men
that gone. But the men who got to come.
Oh. duty is Calling and Vegeance is calling
Their Cry shall never bestilled
Till the last of the Gaps in Australia Ranks
By Australian Sons are filled
