Dear Jack.
I just thought I would send
you a few lines as
the mail is leaving today
Isn't this card nice. So
appropriate for you.
It brought the tears to mother's
eyes when she read it,
mother is not keeping
well at all. You are
for ever in her thoughts
night & day she is talking
& praying for your safety.
If only this cursed war
was over & you safe beside
us once more. But of course it will
have to be fought to a finish now.
But it is cruel for men to be fodder for guns. I do wish
I had been a man I could have done something
then. Recruiting is very brisk in S. Shields now
now dear Jack I haven't room for more. So with love
& the best of wishes for your safety from mother & myself. I remain your ever loving Sister Annie
