August 17th pm 1914
14 Bertram Street
South Shields

My dearest Jack
I received your very
kind & welcome letter & the money
order for three Pounds all safe.
I thank you  very much I see
by your letter that Australia
is in a state of excitement
about this war but Jack
we have been in a terrible state
here to for if the German's
had got into England God
help the British for they would
have been treated worse than
the poor Belgiums for they
have used them frightfully
& destroyed there beautiful
country but thank God that

they are getting well thrashed now
the English & the French are
taking it out of them. They
are driving them back  They
havent got into Paris as they
thought they would the wretches
for where ever they go they are
commiting terrible atrocities but
wait ere the Russians gets to
They will make them sue for mercy
but they will get none, the Brutes
for the horrible deed that
they have  commited Germany
should be wiped of the Earth
but our day  is comming but
England will be too lenient
Now my dearest Son you were
saying in your letter that you
were going to come home to
get a cut at the Germans well
my son I cant blame you for
feeling loyal for your Country

Now my dear son I am sending
you the papers but I dare
say that you will be getting
all the  War News just as well
as us Peggy has not got away
yet the War is keeping her
back The Government it taking
the Ships for transports but
I think that its another excuse
I never see her Now my dear
Son Hoping that you are keeping
well &  that it wont be long
ere I Kiss your dear face once
more With fondest lover
from your ever
loving & affectionate
Mother

Good Night & God bless you
write soon
XXXXXXXXX

but I hope & trust that by the
time that you get Home that
England will be at peace once
more for its been a terrible time
I wish it was all over for I feel
worried to death Shields has
sent a lot of young fellows
to the War a lot of your old
Schoold Lad are away & the
town is full  of Soldiers I see
by the Papers that Australia
to is sending a lot of men
& money Flour & all sorts of
provisions so is Newzealand
India & Canada & Africa
the World is helping t us
so England must be right
its the best thing that has
happened England for the
will not have Germany to
compet & cut her down with
her industries Let us hope so
