Letters from George Leslie Makin to his family, 1917-1918 - Part 17

France
20/8/18
Dear Jim
I received your letter today,
& am glad to know you are still
on that side.
I would have written before, but
I wasn't sure where you would
be, by the time the letter got
across.
I came straight through to the battn
after one day only at the base.
I was very disappointed at not
seeing you before I left, & thought
as you did not come over on
the Tuesday night, that you
must have been on guard, or
some other duty.
I left a day earlier than I
expected to & had no hope
of getting across to see you.
We were well in the stunt the
other day & expect to go over
the top again the day after
2
tomorrow or thereabouts. Anyhow
it should be all over when you
receive this.
After that we shall probably get
a spell we'll surely need it.
I met Paddy Scanlan the other
day. His battery were covering
us & he came across & had
a chat to Tom Parker & myself.
He is well & sends along his
best wishes to you.
No more just now Jim old
Loss, as I am rather busy
& have one or two other letters
to write
Cheerio.
Love from Les.
