Letters received by Field Marshal Lord William Birdwood, 3 January 1917 – 14 December 1917 - Part 4

the references made to the
Govt regarding my work.
If my Administration here
had been criticised at
all, I would have been
prepared to have accepted
the position but to be
dropped as is proposed
will be very detrimental
to my future career, as
it will be assumed at
once that I have been
a failure instead of a
success, & my political
enemies of whom I have
a few will take advantage
of it to the fullest extent.
Under these circumstances
I earnestly request that at least
my promotion as recommended
be pressed for if I only
hold it until the time
McCay proposes to take
over viz the 1st April.
Fisher considers I should
appeal to the Govt. but
I do not wknow whether
I could do much at
this distance.
If my promotion is approved
& I could be employed
say in command of the
Etaples troops it would
be some satisfaction &
a reply to any comment
on my having to hand
over here. White comes
down tomorrow & I am
taking him through the various
groups, going to Weymouth
the following day.
I propose after talking
matters over with him
to write you further.
In the meantime may
I again say that
your kind. letter &
the appreciative manner
in which you have
referred to my services
will (irrespective of what
may happen) The be recognition
which I shall always
prize.
Yours sincerely

My Dear General
I have your
letter to hand advising
me of the C-wealth
Govts. proposal to appoint
McCay as my successor.
& I need hardly say it
has come as a very
great disappointment &
if carried into effect
will do me a great
injustice. I appreciate
indeed your letter and

Dear General Birdwood.
I have just received your letter of the
24th of January enclosing a copy of your
original letter dated 14th December congratulating
me on being awarded the Serbian Order.
I did not receive your first letter, which
must have been lost at sea.
I am delighted that you sent a copy, as I do so
highly appreciate your congratulations and
your kind thoughts. expressed.
I am certain that all the Australian Mounted
Troops would like, very much, to be with you
fighting under you, as we were at Anzac.
Still however, as you say in your letter there
does not look any possibility of this in the
near future especially now that we are so
far out and also seeing that our opponents
are not more than a long day's ride from us.
Both Powles & Foster. have asked me to thank
you for your good wishes to them.
I am sorry to say that poor old Foster is

My Dear General
I am sorry indeed about
your bad luck, but a little
holiday in the South of
France will not be a bad
thing for you in every way &
change of scene & a rest for
mind & body. I hope you will
be able to get Lady Birdie
out. Old Nick was making
anxious enquiries for you the
day I was over at the Dardanelles
Commission "Can you explain to"
"the General Birdwood's reluctance"
"to come & see us". I said in wire
all reluctant, this was not at
the Commission but during lunch.
I think there has been a good deal
of lying going on & some quite
unfounded allegations
regarding the character &
