in column.

a Cape cart for doctor, but can't
get mules harness. Camp after a short
stage.
Thursday May 16th

Boers; am told to advance on left flank.

killed, while about a dozen
badly wounded, amongst them Blank
(mortally) Cunningham (dangerously); Rule
& self (seriously). While of the 5th
Corp Bollinger & Pte Kennedy (mortally) & 5 or
6 others more or less badly. Frank
did splendid plucky work under fire
one Boer firing at him point blank at
40 yards. He had a lot of conversation
w. Boers. Something very wrong w.
works this day; bad management
somewhere. Get Tony Forrest shot
thro' head about 150 yards to left of
where I put Rule in mule waggon
Daley & Hackett did splendid work
after they left me, Greer stuck
to me gamely all through.
Had a very fortunate escape w. my
wound; just missed the intestines &
thigh bone.
Friday May 17th
Allowed no food, for fear intestines are
ruptured, only a sort of beef 'jelly'. ¼
spoonful an hour; am terribly hungry
The Surgeon - Major very kind: w. Bombay
Field Hospital & am carried in a
dooley. Firing can be heard on rear-
guard wh our fellows are lurking.
Report that a shell of ours has killed
9 ILH by mistake. Kitchener a bit of
a messer I am afraid. Travel about
8 miles & camp at 1 p.m. for night.
Cooley washes hands & feet in true
Eastern style. Frank's red cross
cart right in front about 100 yds of
the E.P. tent in wh I lie.
Saturday May 18th
Feeling ripping, altho' pains across
back of loins w. lying down. Got
arrowroot last night & arrowroot
& cocoa this morning. Trek abt
6.30 a.m. & camp for night at 1 p.m. Are
doing very easy stages. Big guns going
on our front & Frank tells me it
was our other column shelling
the 6th WA. who are advance guard
to-day. Little hope for Blank &
Corpl Bollinger (5th). Full up of
lying down. General Bindon Blood in
Carolina & Col. Poulton is on our right.

both doing pretty well. Travel about 12 miles
& camp at 1 p.m. near where column
on our left including Scots Guards &
Inniskillings had camped night before
Young has charge of my division, &
has collared my carbine & bucket.
About 8 men surrendered last Thursday
to Boers; all stripped & turned loose.
Young was among them also Corp. Shaw of
Benson.

All sick & wounded (24) sent into Carolina
early this morning; I the only one left.
Ride in a tonga; very jolty after dooley.
Sent letters to mother & Gipsy last night. Fearfully
cold this morning. Camp at 11.45 am.
8 mile stage only. Commandant Smutch reported
to have passed a week previously, w. commando &
convoy & big herd of beasts. On full diet.
Tuesday May 21st
Still lying in tonga; plenty tucker now.
Move off at 7 a.m; camp for an hour at 12.30.
Evidently livening up after Smutch. Missing
man Furlong (5th) reported to have turned up at
other column. Passed Lake Chrissie yesterday.
Seem to be just travelling straight
thro' country now, destroying no farms or
even scouting widely. No Boers apparent.
About 40 of our men walking for want of
horses. Very well grassed country we are
passing through & well watered.
Lying on my back in tonga what I take
to be old ploughed field proves to be
the old carcases of thousands of sheep,
covering acres of ground. Move on 8 m.
after mid-day camp. On camping
Major Jones tells me our 2 contingents have
branched off to right ^towards Carolina with KRR's who
are to form a depôt. ^half war Our fellows will be
away 2 days as have to escort convoy of
^prisoners back. Rumour also that some of our men
scuppered by Boers to-day, 2 of an
outpost of 3 having ridden into Camp
reporting that 3rd taken. Major still won't
let me walk. Still stiffness over wound.
About 3000 in our column altogether
including, 600 odd ILH; Devons; KRR's &
ourselves along w. 5 in. gun & a battery of
12 pounders.
Wednesday May 22nd

Discipline in contingent very bad xxxxx Set
on march abt 830 a.m. Go about 6 miles & camp.

to War Office for Commission as Chaplain
Lot of men off color; a lot without horses
a lot [[pouting?]]

rain. Fellows return little after three.
To-day Devons let loose among mobs of
sheep brought in & Kill 4,000, two men

Likely to trek to-morrow; country in
front of us very rugged; goes down into
Komatie valley; rumour that we bound
for Amsterdam instead of Barberton
as Boers have trekked South. Lot of
men off colour. Men returned from
escort to convoy abt 4 p.m. Our contingent
lost its name altogether since disaster
& bayonet charge on horseback by C.O.
Frank insists' on pack horse & gets it.
