Dear Mrs Hilton,
I received on the 27th Jan last your letter of 16-8-17. May I offer my
most sincere congratulations on your marriage. I trust that every possible happiness may attend
you and your husband in your married life. Am sorry these congratulations are so belated. In
May & June last year I received your letters of 17-1-17 and 20-2-17. I asked my cousin, Mr J W Eustace
to advise you that I had received these letters. We have recently been given permission to write
more letters so that I now hope to be able to reply direct to any letters I may receive; although it is
still sometimes difficult to reply promptly. We are often without letters for long periods; and then, if we
are fortunate, we may receive a number of letters together. This was the case with me at the time I received
your letter. During a period of about five months I had received only one mail of about six letters:
then, during the latter part of Janry last, I received about forty letters covering a period of about
three months. You can imagine how good it is to receive letters here. Unfortunately big mails are very rare
We have had rather a cold winter. Since beginning of Dec. last the temperature has seldom been
above Freezing Point. There have also been a number of falls of snow. The Hills & Valleys present a
very beautiful appearance when covered with snow; but I need scarcely say that the accompanying
cold is not appreciated by Australians here. About a month ago we had a number of earthquake
shocks. Our houses were well shaken, but no damage was done. Kind regards. Yours very sincerely.

My Dear Unknown "Sister"/ Please excuse abruptness of this note, but we are permitted to write only four lines.
My sincerest thanks are tended to you for the kind thought that prompted you to write us, and I can assure
you that your cheerful news re Australia's prospects has done much to brighten up our spirits. Once again thanking
you for your good wishes and kind thoughts. I remain, Sincerely Yours, M. J. Troy, 16th Battalion, A.I.F.

Dear Miss Duffy, on behalf of the men from the AE2 and the Australian soldiers in this
camp, I wish to thank you heartily for having remembered us in the misfortune of war that
has befallen us, and regret that lack of space forbids my saying more that that it gives
us all great pleasure to know we are not forgotten by those at home, while we are
waiting for the dawn of a day which will set a term to our captivity, I am yrs sincerely
