Dear Lil,
Hullo Lil, I guess you reckon
its about time I set to and wrote
a few lines to you.
I trust that you will forgive me for
my laxity, as probably like most men
I have not acquired a flair for
writing, Ponderously though I manage
to keep up a fairly regular supply
to both mum & Rene.
I was indeed pleased and grateful for
Your thoughts of me during Xmas, twas
indeed a pleasant surprise to
receive a card from You, Also I had
received one from Gwen at about that
time I would like to write to her
but somehow I cannot get to it as
I fear I may blunder, and strike the
wound a little deeper than it actually
is, I do feel for her though and my
thoughts were with her on that sad
occasion
How are all the folks at home, I
would like to know if Albert is at
2
home in Brisbane I met an officer
who was in the same unit, I think I
remember him saying that his Particular
crew were there for a longer period, and
that probably Albert has been home
sometime, He wasn't home when I was
last on leave and I was wondering,
Your Ma & Pop I hope they are well
and doing OK, Pat & Dorothy I s'pose
they are getting quite Young ladies these
days, I remember I saw Pat in the
barbers shop (adelaide Rlwy Stn) when
last home on leave and I was
quite surprised to see she how much she
had grown.
And David what of he I bet he's
growing so I won't know him, he'd be
going to school now and quite a man
in himself.
I seem to be well behind as regards
news from No9, I must give mum a dig
to let me know more of Your doings,
I suppose Sytton is still at Alice, he's
written to me a long while and
me like a clolt haven't yet answered
it, I'll get round to it in the near
future, I hope to be home soon
over,
3
for some leave and I hope then to
Pop in and see you all, I guess Im
Not much of an officer as yet but I m
learning, Pretty fast
Well Lily I trust that You too are
well and that you like me, like
all of us are waiting impatiently
for the close of this business, Personally
Im sick of it, and I know that I cant
Complain for there are thousands in a
worst Position, but Ill be sick of it for
them too,
Cheerio all the best to everyone home
Yours Sincerely
Colin

Dear Colin,
Just a few lines, which I
feel I must write after making
such a quick exit last Sunday
night.
But first of all I want
to thank you very much indeed
on behalf of Kenneth James for your
generous gift. It was very thoughtful
of you Colin, & you couldn't
have had much time either; & I
want you to know that we appreciate
it very much.
I have also received a wile from
Rene & Mrs Bean, I shall be writing
to them later.
Well Colin I still haven't got over
the fact that I had to make my
departure on the only night you
had with us. It really was bad
luck, as I feel as though I hardly
saw you, to have a talk. You
did see the wedding photos didn't
2
you, & I had intended to show you
some snaps as well. But maybe
you saw those while you were home
However, I can't say I am sorry that
it is now all over. Did you say,
"It was quick work? Certainly was
And I had a comparatively good
time, and I am now sparking on
six. well, almost, I'll be glad
to get out of these terrible beds,
they get as hard as bricks.
Well I guess you are waiting for
me to say, we have a beautiful
baby and so he is Colin, he is
only a little chap 6½ lbs but don't
they say "little & good".
He xx is a lot like Tom, particularly
around the eyes & forehead.
He has dark hair, what there is of
it, and that has them all tricked.
But it look as though it will
go fair. Well that is enough
you will be getting bored stiff
of all these details.
I had a letter from Tom & it is
enough to say that" he reckons his
feet haven't touched the ground
3
since he received the news" Can't
you imagine him, I've an idea
he is a very proud Daddy. I
only wish he could see his son,
but I guess I'll need lots of
patience before our luck is in.
I received several wires from the
boys in the Unit, & in all we
have just on 20 telegrams. Everyone
is so good to me.
Well Colin I guess by the time
you receive this you will be well
& truly back into the Army routine
once again. Gosh if only you
could all come home for good,
it would be just wonderful.
But all we can do is to keep on
smiling, & hope & pray that the
day is not far distant.
And now I must close Colin
thanking you once again for your
gift to Kenneth. All at home send
their kindest regards & hope you
are A 1. And I'll say Cheerio,
with love, from your sister-in-law,
Joyce.
P.S.
Please excuse pencil & scribble
it's pure laziness really
Joy
