Dearest darling wife,
Well Im darned glad
to be able to write again and darned
glad to be writing in ink,
I received no 24, so I have 23-24-25 to
answer,
Do you Ken that your hubby loves you
considerable and what is more he loves
you more than anything else in this goofy
world,
Since I wrote last, we have erected 2
lots of showers and commenced on a YMCA
hut,
The showers are to be used as mainly by lads
coming in from Coys, so they can get a
bath and do a spot of washing, they
come in in batches for a spell, and it
is a relief to them to get clean and
sleep with their boots off awhile,
I am in my "doover" at present having
just had a "brew" and some peaches and
plum pudding which Ive kept from the
2
Xmas party hamper we were issued.
Well I shall shortly be sending home
some paintings, I found a box of oil
paints and some brushes which were
left behind by the Jap and Ive already
tried one out doing a scene of TARAKAN
Its my first attempt with a paint brush
its pretty awful but after a few more
goes I reckon III be able to do some
nice ones,
I mix the paint with mosquito lotion and
paint on any white material,.
We had a couple more lads join us
yesterday they have returned from Hosp.
that makes 39 blokes I have now, quite
a large crew, I guess they're pretty easy to
handle though,
No 23.
I see Eleanor is "also adept", or interested
in drawing, having a pastel book she
apparently quite satisfied, I think its
a grand idea to let her scribble at will
3
providing, where she does it is watched
it would give her an idea how to hold
a pencil or chalk
I see pop has finished mending the bath
heater, I often wonder about you when
you mention a bath, that water takes
some carrying from copper to bath.
Yes honey next time Im home Ill be able
to tell you a tale or two of these
operations, That will suit me too "Bas goos”
as the nigs say meaning "Very good"
I don't think you understand my position
honey, addmittedly I see a lots of dead
a lot of killing but its only the man
who has it day and night for months
on end that is liable to be affected
by it, no I think you may rest assure
it won't affect me any unless its' to
make me love you more, and look forward
to peace and our life together, Im just
the same bloke honey and our love
and our dreams as ∨so deeply embedded inover xxx
4
me that it will take more wars
than this to oust them and as for
our love well nothing living or dead
can alter it,
I admit that being back in civil life
will be strange, being on leave is strange
but its stranger the wright way, and
as you say Ill soon settle down, Im no
wanderer by nature and your love
our babies our home is all I desire.
You talk of imagination and talking
to me, You must have struck it lucky
its hard to do I know, and takes a lot
of consentration, it is impossible for
me to do here as I sleep with the Sgt
and my batty either side of me,
Please be more implicite, what the
devil is a "dooderator operator", would
You ask mum xxx, and if its what Im
thinking it is, I blush deeply at her
forwardness, and she'd better say nothing
(its disgraceful)
5
No 24 was written on V.E. day (does
that stand for Victory in Europe.?)
In 23 you wrote of mum xxx being wet
No 24 you say that, in 23 you mention
she was going to the parade, possibly
she got so excited re seeing "duke" she
got wet, or was it rain, Was it
tears that I fell or was it rain 11 pb-b #.
Good for you Mrs C.D. those books will
be mighty "handy"
Apparently Eleanor doing papa in the
pants is only a rare occurrence these
days, I see here where she received the
business end of a ruler for it.
I dont think anything is more beautiful
than a baby saying its prayers, so
simple truthful, and lovely, it
make me long to see her and is
something to look forward too,
Well darling I too must close, it
nears dinner time and Ive done very
6
little today,
So then Cheerio for now and give some
big kisses to our darling babies, &
tell mum xxx Ill forgive her for
her forwardness,
Remember whatever you are doing
wherever you are, your'e not far
from me, and my love stays with
you all the while. At nights maybe
I creep a little closer to you, and I
feel you are nearer to me, God
bring along the day when we will
meet again to part again never.
I love you darling wife with all my
heart,
Forever XXXXXX Col
