Letters from Lt Colin Douglas Simper to Mrs Irene Simper Wallet 2, Part 12

moments looking at them.
I'm going to continue honey
answering No 1 March 19.
Practically 1 month old, yet
as loving and as fresh with
news as if it were yesterday
I'm certainly glad you did go
to the reception I knew that if
you did you'd feel better for
it. I'm darned sorry bout
your heels. I never even
asked you if you were tired
or if your feet were sore. I
made you stand on that
platform for half an hour
afterwards too. We could
have easily found a seat,
what a dope I am, and you
never murmered one bit.

So the wood arrived at
last eh! probably looks
out of place in the yard.
it's about time too
Well it seems Eleanor will be
an interested learner where
writing is concerned, drawing
or scribbling over everything
is not the best but it's good
to know she likes it.
You'd like to kiss me, right
now?? well here I am
some boy eh! some drawing
Hand drawn pictures - see original document
Gee there's sure a lot
of dresses frocks
pyjamas getting made
down there just
now, what did I frighten
you off it when I was
home, which reminds me
my pants are alright &
21
just what the doctor ordered
which reminds me again, one
of the chaps asked the doc
about Birth Control but he
wouldn't give anything away
about it he said, an army
doctor is not allowed to
give such information as the
army has the cream of Aust
manhood and the country
needs babies, / probably
a good joke don't you think?
You mention our last day
Saturday together. We sure
did things on impulse didn't
we. I was crooked on myself
at Wayville not finding a
quiet place for us to park
while waiting for me to
report, although we didnt care
22
very much what anyone
thought, hiding behind a
lamp post , or even thinking
of getting in the tram.
I didn't have any trouble
getting through the gate on
the way in I just bowled
through and was 10 yds
inside before they saw me.
There was a bit of a hold up
as one fellow dropped his
haversack down on the line
alongside the train and
the porter's were panicking, as
the train was about to move
and the bloke was head
first down getting it, he
was a fool he would have
been cut to pieces had the
train moved forward, he
didnt seem to mind —

Coffee for breakfast is OK
so long as it is made
correctly, the stuff the army
has is too coarse and you
eat it not drink it. I like
it if its made right.
glad its doing Mum XXX good
OK darling I know you love
me, we know we love each
other and for my part I can
say nothing or no one loves
or loved anyone more than
I love you. I'm going to
close honey for today. I've
written this fairly quickly, &
with more letters to answer
tonight I should be able
to write decently, (No of pages
that is.
It's sure funny sometimes writing
24
just rolls off the pen, other
times all the brains in the
world cannot form the sentences
So anyway darling I do hope
I've not made to many
mistakes. I hate reading
over a letter, I trust you'll
understand my previous
lapses. Mum XXX was certainly
right in her judgement.
Cheerio for today this leaves
your ole Man loving you
and needing, just what you
have down there, you our
darling babies.
Regards to every one home
I hope and trust they are
well. Regards to Bet & Thel
Audrey when you see them
some day maybe they may
25
realize how lucky we are
when they have been tested
as we have, strained far
apart, young in body and
yet old in heart and mind
and 4 years of pretty well
constant separation has only
served to strengthen our bond.
They say abse absence makes
the heart grow fonder, it
also makes the heart stronger
Bless you then dear wife.
Remember I love you dearly
for always.
