Diary of 262 Lance Corporal Alexander Lyall - Part 5

not in this ward.
I have had nothing done
to my nose since my
arrival here nor am
I likely to have now. One
doctor to day the first I
have seen since I came
here informed me it was
too late to have anything
done now. I had a bit of
a row with him over the
matter. He blames the
military authorities & I
had to remind him I
had been in the hospital
xxxxx about a week & he
was the first doctor I had seen
I have asked to be transferred
to the Australian Hospital in
London I will know what
is going to happen tomorrow
Naturally I feel full up
of the place & Dublin in
general but things may
pan out alright yet so
I am hoping for the best
we have.
12/8/16
Things have greatly improved
here the past few days, I feel
far more satisfied with myself
Our own Doctor is back now
(Sir Thomas Mailes) & I will get
the very best of treatment from
him. I have been enjoying
myself immensely the past
few day. Having been for
moter drives tea parties etc
Yesterday afternoon I had a
good game of tennis with some
Irish colleens & came back
loaded up with flowers.
I have had news of Andra
Willie & John & feel more
content. There still seems to be
a good deal of xxxx unrest
about Dublin I should not
be surprised if there is more
trouble. I expect to be here
for a short time yet to have
electric treatment for
my upper lip.
17/8/16
Things have been more or
less quiet the past few days
We have had a good deal
of rain & the weather has been
unsuitable to get about.
I was out to tea yesterday
afternoon & had a great
game of tennis at a
private house. I was the
xxx only soldier there & had
three nice girls to myself.
I was surprised to get back
by seven o'clock but I
could not get away & climbed
the rails at the hospital at
eleven o'clock coming in
through the window I expect
I will have to stand the
consequences today but it
was worth getting into trouble
for so I'll grin & bear it.
9/9/16
I have had a good
opportunity of visiting
the principal parts of
Dublin lately & fine the
surrounding districts very
beautiful. I have seen
the Botanical Garden
Zoo the different colleges
& grounds & several of
the seaside places. I did
not expect to have such
a long time in Dublin
when first I arrived but
there seems to be no
signs of my leaving
yet for a week or two
I have met more patriotic
people than what I thought
were in all Dublin &
it is a pity that such
people should suffer
for a few. The Sinn Feins
are very quiet now. They
are a party that dont
know what they want
They hate England more
than the Germans do.
Home Rule is not
wanted here but the
majority of the people will
agitate for it till they get
it. Then they will want to
be rid of it for ever.
It is a great pity there is
so much trouble here.
One person cannot trust
another
13/10/16
I left Dublin on Sept 25th
& came to London where
I spent a day before
reporting at Salisbury
After two days at Salisbury
I got my sick furlough
16 days of free life & fresh
air. I arrived home
on Oct 2nd after a weary
journey from London. I
had the pleasure of seeing
one Zepp come down
before leaving London
I have had a very
good holiday here
& feel very sorry my
time is so short.
but no sorrow no
joys. I'll put up with
it. Macduff is very
quiet. The harbour
will be OK when the
new extension is
finished. One is far
away from the sence
of war here but no
from the sorrows of
worry & bereavement
I left Macduff on the 14th Oct
along with George & had his
company as far as Cupar
Angus. On my arrival at
London I heard John was
to arrive from France that
afternoon. I went to
Victoria & meet him & spent
that night & all next day.
I saw him off at Kings Cross
for home. I have been on
Salisbury Plains for the
past week & don't care too
much for the change.
I am in the Orderly Room here
at Durham Downs & find the
job O.K. but things are
dead quiet round about.
2/11/16
I left Salisbury Plains on the
27th Oct & came down to Wareham
It is a much better camp
& the surrounding much
more pleasant. We are quite
close to the town which is
a nice little place. We
are allowed into town every
night & the townsfolks do
their best to make us comfortable
They seem very sociable. We
are very close to Bournemouth
& only twelve miles from the
sea-coast.
