Papers of Corporal Harry V. Boyne - Part 6
Wednesday April 14th Given
permission to proceed to
Moresby to interview MR
Porter (D.R.O) Result :
Vacancies existed but
as I could not type was
not wanted (Coming from
an infantry unit didn't
appeal to him).
Thursday April 15th To Moresby
once again this time to
interview Capt. ? of
D.F.O. Result - vacancies
existed. Had I any previous
experience? would let
me know.[[?]] (Coming
from an infantry unit and
W A didn't appeal here
either)
Friday April 16th Interview
with Lieut Boyle. of. A.A.B.P.O.
(Had a letter of introduction
to capt Fenton DA.D.POST.S.
from Geoff Barrow but
Capt Fenton on leave)
Result : What previous
postal experience only
unofficial P.M. - didn't
hold much water - new
recruits coming from
mainland. would let me
know if anything doing
(By this time knew that there
would NOT be anything doing)
Saturday April 17th
Interview (yes another one
with C.Q. docks
operating unit
Thought I had a chance
here as they were mostly
West Aussies but missed out
no room for N.C.O's
Sunday 18 th Had a spell
from interviewing leads
and thought what a great
reward it was after
having seen the Papuan
campaigns right through
going to hospital the night
my unit returned home
and eventually spending
three months there, being
boarded "B" class and
classed unfit for further
front line service
Monday 19 On again
interview with O.C.
Canteens: Result. Could
have placed me earlier
in the week had I
been there / while I was
chasing around at his offices
but new recruits on the
way from the mainland
and unviable to place me.
Tuesday 20th Interview
with Capt Petty D.A.C. SALVAGE
H.A.N.G.F. The first officer I
had struck who lets me
explain how I was placed
gave me a sympathetic
hearing during which
I assured him that what I
did not know regarding
this work I was prepared
to pick up in my own time
(typing especially) told me
I could start there as soon
as I could be transferred
from Reception Camp.
Wednesday 21rd. Awaiting a
movement order to transfer
Thursday 22nd Received
my marching orders and
made my own way over
to my new home and raining
like hell for three days
Friday 23rd Preparing
to settle down in N.G.
for a further nine months
before any chance of leave
being granted. Feeling
very down in the dumps
these days. Not receiving
any mail and by no
means impressed
with new personnel
with a few exceptions
A very conservative
Maj, who peered at me
as though I was some
strange animal that
had escaped from captivity
very few seem active
or even knew there was a
xxx xxxx war on, so
made up my mind to
keep to myself as much
as possible as they were
not a good "mixing" crowd
(none from W.A.) not
feeling very well and
very unhappy with
everything in general
Later on met Jack ^(Sal Army) and
a few other boys from the
2/14th Raids on
May 13th, 15th, 16th
Monday xx May 17th 1943
These notes of April are not
written as xxxxxxx record
of my own personal
grievance but as an
an indication of what
thousands of soldiers
in a similar position
to mine can expect in
seeking employment in
post-war Australia
The action you have seen
whether overseas or in
Papua won't count a
thing (in most cases)
For instance I was one
of many heroes after the
"Ganosphere" yet my xx reward
when physically buggared
and no longer A1
was to be up & on
the island and dumped
into some as the [[?]]
or else chase around
interviewing different
gentlemen? they themselves
"well in" in basejots. Previously
when with the unit we
were told that we would
only be able to do 5 months
tropical service and
When that 5 months was
completed (and I was with
them until the last night)
they were sent home
Yet I now had to remain
18 months before leave
was granted, to and then
to come back here at the
expiration of leave??????
