Cook again today. All officers
who have not received mail from
home since captured gave in names
& particulars - hopes of getting news
soon.
S/Sgt Ogden gave his weekly
talk - jolly good.
Announcement of details of M.O's
to go to various compounds daily.
I'm for 35-38 (theatre) with
Capt. Hutt.
December 14
Went with Capt. Hutt RAMC to do
inspection in Compound 35, 38 only
to find that most of the men had
been deloused and shifted to
another compound. Saw those who
were left and then checked those
already shifted - found a few
eggs & lice in spite of delousing
- must be packing their gear
in disinfector too tightly.
Nothing much doing for rest of
day.

Had game of basketball, enjoyed it, and
finished up very stiff.
Dec 29th
Played basketball morning and afternoon
& followed it with a walk in company with Sg
JackPass passing Grosburen after skirting 520 and so home.
Hard frost today
December 30th
Up early to Dabendof with the dental patients for
Eric Cooper, whom I saw together with Bill Hurst,
& Annan & Readman. 40 hrs doing nothing & noone will
know for 2/52 whether or not either 401 or 404 is to
come to us. S/Sgt Johnstone of the 2/2 AFA is with Readman
there and in any case we may ask for a change
taking him and another for Jones & Tocker. Stanway
& party went to Stalag for costumes etc...
Light snow.
Stanway bought note from Stalag saying I
could not have electric cooker - Lager(Johnson?)had
suggested I apply for one as stove in too small
to cook on.

Slept in, nothing of interest, except
visit of Obertstabsarzt, until evening. He
looked about, talked a lot, promised a
few things, including an early begining
with Smith 10091 who is ill mentally
& physically. In the evening the
lads celebrated with a dance-concert
not at all bad, and then a racket
for the change over of 42-43. Lights
on till 12.30. Light snow falling all day.
Oh well! so passed 42, my first full
year in Germany and, I trust the last.
Drank to the Kids & Glad at the turning
and thought of Mum & Dad, Ines & in-laws.
John 6 in 2 days and Glad & I married
7 yrs in 6 more days.
My return-ticket is good for
this year!!

Well, the men refused work this morning as
threatened, and Kommandant said S.M.O McPhillips
had stayed at Stalag at his own request. This
satisfied about 50 who went off. The others, together
with camp-staff and light workers were lined up
5-deep outside barracks 426 and covered by two
machine-guns and about 40 rifles, then addressed
by Stalag officer and Head Man of Confidence who
repeated Kommandant's explanation, with details -
that McPhillips had been accused of helping escapes
and had refused to leave Stalag till faced by his
accuser and given a hearing. Looked ticklish
for a bit but to me, who was out of line of fire and
therefore not personally involved it looked improbable
that Jerrys would fire, as, behind the ranks were
other guards, a much used railway system, and
houses and streets. But it must have looked
mighty different to those lads who were looking into
the muzzles of those guns. They were told that they
would have to make up lost time and go without
books or entertainments till the Kommandant decided
otherwise.
The German Sanitater escorted me on my first
walk this afternoon.

Nothing to report today - Read "Cradle of the
Storms" by Father Bernard Hubbard, S. J. all about
volcanic exploration in Alaska - very good.

Hewitt went off to Dentist this morning, and I was still
asleep at 9.30 when Walkerden walked into ask me a
question about something or other.
Asked for an interview with Stabsarzt Dommels to-day to
stabilise something re medical supplies
and dental treatment,
both of which are in a deplorable state.

Quiet day, but a bit before midnight the air-raid
alarm sounded and we made ready for a night's fun.
However, it turned out out to be a lone plane which dropped
a parachute flare, collected some Ack Ack, then made off
without dropping any eggs, or so the papers said.
Played bridge and were beaten.
Ellis and I put in an hour or so at German
to-day.

(? ! ) from Geneva dated Sept 15th
readdressing letters here*]
Woke up late and ran into a
"blue" - Smith, my Aussie Orderly, came
to me, told me he had finished work
because of continued trouble he had had
with English lads who had originally
insisted that, not belonging to RAMC,
he was no medical orderly, and that
they wanted RAMC personnel. Apparently
something brought it to a head yesterday
and to-day he will work no more, with
intention of forcing his ultimate transfer
to another camp, preferable of Aussies.
Walkerden will work (he's had trouble
too, though a steady chap) but wont take
charge. That leaves Livingstone RAMC
who's far from ideal. However they all
set to and effected the transfer of the
M.I. room to the 2nd room of Revier.
Sailed from Fremantle two years ago
to-day. Left Glad and John on wharf,
with Myrtle, George and Ian.
September 23
Told Kommandant this morning that
I was short two orderlies, and that I wanted
two more, one to be a sergeant. Smith and
Walkerden saw him, he said he'd do what
he could, since they had done their work
very well and would try to get them
of doing 'Strafe'. Since there is no charge
to lay against them, except unwillingness
to work, they may get away with it.
They've applied for Ward, their unit-mate
to go with them should they be shifted
to an Australian camp.
Paid today.
