Diaries of John Kevin Lloyd - Part 15

Dec 11 _ '42
Reveille at 5.30, everyone out & barracks vacated by 7.30.
One truck was available for transport of Red + and sports
& games gear to the siding just outside our north fence
it taking four or five trips to complete the shift - my stuff
went with it. A special tram was there to take us,
two third-class carriages and 9-10 waggons, and I had
the honour of sharing a half carriage with 24 of the guard
& O.Lieutenant Daniels during the 1hour trip. Reached
Teltow in the early afternoon and took 10 minutes to
march to the camp which covers an area rather
smaller than that of Staaken - accommodated in 4
barracks rather like our old ones, wired off at one end of
the compound, rest of the area being taken up by
Kitchen - Rec. Room, administrative blocks, outhouse
and vegetable gardens - arranged unlike Staaken
on no set plan. I was put in A Barrack, in a room
just like my old one, sharing temporarily with Sgt Mackay
(Barrack Chef) and S.M. Howland. The Revier is in this
block, very nicely arranged, though the M.I. Room is in one
of the small end-bunks - there's gear there that we hadn't at
Staaken - standard-lamp, examination-couch, glass & metal
instrument case & dressing trolley etc. . The room is too small
but we may be able to change it, in any case, cupboard
and shelf space should make a big difference. Went to
bed reasonably early, and very tired.

Dec 12th 42
Practically frozen during night and woke to find hardpost
outside. "Got cracking" early on getting extra cupboards, tables,
chairs, etc for Revier & for own room, and trying to
arrange for different stores in them. These have no space
on top for foments or cooking - boiling water essential in
M.I. Room, and I'll not cook with the men. so that some
arrangements must be made. - Latrines, wash-houses &
shower are inside, but latrines are nearly all blocked,
showers not very efficient & hot water available only once
weekly. Subs were here before us, and though the place
is generally new and in good condition, floors are dirty.
Lager-fuhrer promises to get carpenters, plumbers, etc, on
the job on Monday 14th. Men are not supposed to cook in
rooms, but to do it in boiler room on special stove which
appears to be us.. - Lager has a few pigs, chickens,
and sheep, and one of the lads has been appointed their
valet.
Gerry Sanitater attended sick-parade at 1700hrs,
seems a decent lad, and I pointed out to him that we
had no instruments at all, and very little gear. He
asked for a list of requirements and the names of men
the return of whose papers from Stabarzt Wieckes I needed
urgently.
To bed a little after 2200 hrs. still tired. I'll have
to face a cold-shower soon if hot-water is not available.
NOVEMBER 11th Month-1942
20 FRIDAY 324-41
A.I.F.
Time drags on mid-
afternoons. I often draw to sleep
but purposely refrain from
doing so on most occasions.
Rumours of a large scale attack
on the remnants of the axis
arms ports in Innis. Yesterday
the Jap officer Chui MIYUNI told
me of the 3rd gunt battle in
Solomons. As yet it seems
to be undecided. Am having
rorp rope rings made in an
endeavour to popularise deck
tennis. Time will tell as to
whether I have succeeded as
well as with soccer.
1942-30 Days NOVEMBER
21 SATURDAY 325-40
Visited Hosp with
the band. Had a good yarn to Coal,
Bostock, Chalmers, Drecker & Leah.
Attended concert in the evening. The
atmosphere of goodwill between
the Dutch and AIF is very noticeable.
Dutch sextet dressed in their green
uniforms and some well [[bearded?]]
were given a great reception, and
one of them, a Malay, dressed in a
sarong sang three Malay songs.
Our "ladies" are given a great
reception as soon as they appear.
One flashed ^the seat of her pants to the
audience as she made her way on
to the stage from amongst the
jeering audience. Natives had
an all night sermon at the main
pagoda. A4Bar. sounded like a farm
yard at midnight last night.
NOVEMBER 11th Month-1942
22 SUNDAY 326-39
Mass & H.C. at 0815. The ^light mists
which hang about among the
trees in the early morning are
very picturesque. Jap held the
usual count. Cholera is
prevelant in Tavoy. 66 cases
are known. Precautions will
have to be taken and water
hygiene tightened up. The
temple at our gate is Buddist
and not Hindu as previously
noted in these pages. Some
sort of Childrens day was held
there today. Tug of war and
climbing the greasy pole -
naked. Children are the
same the world over. The rope
broke on one occasion.
1942-30 Days NOVEMBER
23 MONDAY 327-38
All camp infected against
Cholera. Ali Baba and his 6
young children were innoculated
as a [[?]] precaution
Discussed the holding of birthday
celebrations next Sunday for
2/29 Bn personnel. Buddists had
another all night session.
Rumours of critical fighting in
Tunisia, Solomon Islands &
Russia. Tomorrow will be
Marys birthday. I loosened
a front tooth on my plate
but fortunately I have an
old plate intact. It seems
to fit well enough.
[*3*] October
11 8
My "fiitter" of last night off to 119 this a.m. in
attempt at admission - Can't look after case who
may be anything but epilepsy - O.K. this morning
Came back, however, and Kommandant blew in
full of advice re sending important cases to
Lazaret - bloody nerve!
Letter and card to Glad, card to Ines.

October
12
-
Most of last evening I spent preparing case [[shots?]]
for light-workers' trip to be inspected by Stabarzt,
nothing came of it today.
-
October 13
Very quiet, a lot of sleep and some bridge.
-
Oct. 14.
Gave Allan his second lot of oil this week,
not bad stuff, actually, but not much about.
Gerry officer visited camp, told boys that only 8
[[?]] of mail per man would be delivered, and
only of those written would go out, each per
month.
[*3*] October
195
Three letters - two from Mum of Jan 31 and March 31
and one from Geneva, of 16 Sept, telling me they were
inquiring in India for Dominic's particulars. Mum's
were a blessing to get, first since 27 Jan - Cheesy
enough, with general news, except for one bit saying
that Zis Virginio died in '40. Dad and Mum
both well, and Glad, the kids & Ines grand.
-
[*2*] October
16
Two to-day - letter from "Students' Help" telling
of sending of Wheeler's "Operative Surgery", and a
card from Swiss Catholic Mission, Linbourg, from
Ada (Barsotti Manfredini) "Risporto a tua ultima Dominico
prigioniero India. Zia Maria Agostine &
Bendettine Fano. Giacomo Universtiy of Houston
Texas. Bene te & tuos. Scrivi Selivaomo (?)"
?Meningitis in Revier. Did L.P. with serum
needle. Paid to-day - R.M 144 down.
-
October 17.
C.S.F. caused repercussions. Gerry sanitater
Unterfeldwebel in at 9a.m. arranging transfer to 119.
Boss called me to office, told me to get up earlier - we'll see.
He later kicked a lad in "Strafe". To-morrow's football
trip to 404 cancelled. Paid to-day
April 12th - Went off to-day with the interoffizier (Tubby) Jimmy Ellis, Jacky Morris, and Burt [[Henney?]]
to Stalag, and after considerable buggering about, during which [[Henney?]] had his name xx
taken for not standing to attention to a Hauptmann, and then delivered them to 517, 520
and to ourselves. We later, Doc. [[A?]], Hunt, Eric, Sam (batman) and I (the Snakes) won our first
engagement in Barrack A first division basketball by 4-2. Bridge in the evening which we won
comfortably.
April 13th - Sgt. Smith left this morning for Lager 730 where he will probably stay for a few days
before going on to his permanent address. Game of basketball at midday which I did
not enjoy, started putting up a rail fence around our garden, in which Hewitt & the
pard are now planting seeds. Had a good game of Rugby from six o'clock to seven against the
camp-team, and they beat us 3-0 right on time - a penalty which was wrongly awarded. I finished
up with a recurrence of the left calf-damage, and an injured right thumb.
April 14th - Quiet day. Finished fence around the garden. Received & accepted R.M.36
pay.
April 15th - Very warm day. Many of us were outside in thin shirt & shorts, including me, and it
was very pleasant.
April 16th - Away at 7a.m. with four of the lads and a guard to Res. Laz. 122, me for X.Ray of right
[*2*] thumb, one of lads for X.Ray of foot, another for one of tooth, and the other two for electrocardiograms
(E.K.G.). The X.Rays were finished by 0930hrs, and then we waited until 1315hrs. while
late-coming soldiers & civvies went in ahead of us. At the end of that time our posten entered a protest with
the sister, who was packing up, and she, [[?]] old - rushed us through in obvious bad temper and
many requests for speed - bloody hide! We hurried back to Tempelhof station and judged it
nicely at Lichterfeld.Ost for the 2-1 to Teltow and were just making it when the guard held us that, as he
had bought no tickets we should have to walk the four miles home!! Anyhow, when we returned there were
two letters, one of 8th Oct, from Godfather wishing me Merry X-Mass, and other from Glad, Jan. 26th, telling
me she and the kids were still in Busselton and had all had Chicken-Pox! Well!!
April 17th - helped Hewitt plant seeds in garden, then had our little altar repaired by one of
[*2P*] carpenters, and got renewed insight into Gerries' keenness for wenching. One young
near-blonde, built for comfort with a fair share of [[?]], I must confess gave me ideas
more fitting in a bachelor than a married man. Had two parcels to-day, small ones, of tobacco
and cigarettes.
April 18th - Sunday. The lads played football in the afternoon the lads
[*4*] from 428 arrived and played in Rugger - Readman did not come with them. It was a
very good game, fast and open with plenty of back and forward moves and we won by
26-8. 428 were not outclassed as the scores suggest, and, for a small lager did very well. Fr. Scarborough
came during match and afterwards had Confession, Mass, Communion. There was a concert during the
evening, but I stayed away to write letters-one to Glad, and cards to Mum & Dad & Ines.
April 19th - Quiet day, started making a light rake for the garden. Pard and I (Eric started
game for me) played Jackson and Kidd the first leg of 100 [[?]] up, and they got away to
a good start, winning by 1700. Had definite news to-day that men of 517 are going back to 404 and that Aunan is to go, too. Bang goes his chance of a hospital job! Very sorry to lose him, too.

Dec 18
Got up at 0555 to go with Sanitater and
Roy Walkerden to Sanitabpaik to collect instruments etc
though we did not leave till 01000 hrs. Baxter with
injured foot came with us, so that our first stop was
Rev.Las III, Tempelhof, to have him X.Rayed. Got there
by bus, tram & foot and quite enjoyed it. Hospital is a
big place, staffed mainly by nuns, [[?]] I've
not seen before, Hence by foot & tram to the
Sanitabpaik. Saw a goodish bit of Berlin, and in
many places crowds of people in streets buying fir
boughs to act as Christmas-trees. At the depot they
gave me a grand spin, and everything I asked for.
All stock now is rubber gloves [[??]] outfit, [[??]]
one or two other items. Out Sanitater appears to
be a good chap, very helpful, and as different from
the one at Staaken as chalk from cheese. Three
Russian girls were in the train on the way back
and a crowd of Frenchmen, and the comments
the latter on the former were much what I might
have expected.
Quite tired and hungry at the end of the day, got
home at 1745.
One week to Christmas.

Dec 19
-
Made up for yesterday's early rise by sleeping
in until 1300 hrs, enjoyed every minute of it, too.
Rest of day was quiet enough, but managed to get
three shelves put up in our bunk - mine I have
filled with all my books, which it takes very nicely.
-
[*6*] Dec 20 Sunday
-
Got three extra blankets, used two to make a
curtain between our "kitchen-diner" and our "bed-sitting",
and the third as a table cloth in the latter. Makes the
whole place quite cosy. Bill Hurst came to-day, and
had a quick cup of tea in our bunk - Trying to get
Fr. Scarborough here on Christmas Day.
Wrote two letters to Glad, cards to Mum & Dad, to Ines,
Maria, and Giacomo - accumulation of two weeks, as there
was no issue last Sunday.
Get a lot of fun out of "Ludo" these days, didn't
think I'd ever return to it at my age.
-
Dec 21
-
Nothing doing to-day - batch of new battle-dress
trousers & jackets, arrived from Stalag.
Boys fixed up a basketball court outside
during the weekend. No4 working party has
already stopped work for Christmas.
