Diary of Gerald Eugene MacDonald Stuart - Part 4
this office orders this unit to
explain what had become
of a third [[Divnl?]] L [[unit ^which must have been]] left
by the 7th [[?]] Sectn & not collected
by it's corresponding unit 8th [[S?]] [Ent ?]
when relief was expected between
3rd & 1st Brigades on 16 - 17 /7/18.
In the two previous instances
some reasons for fault finding
could be found as ordnance
stores & returnable material
Should be sent to the nearest
Dump when found by any unit
but in this last case the
climax was reached when
the unit was called in to explain
the where abouts & disposal of
certain items belonging to an
outside unit, which unit was
definitely informed that no
responsibility would be taken
for stores in question.
If a unit having no claim whatsoever
thinks can drop its stores
within the lines of another unit's
& then hold the latter responsible
had omitted using refusal of latter
to assume responsibility, if this
is so, the only recourse appears
to be to lay a charge ^to refuse to
allow stores to be so dumped & to
take disciplinary action of the duties [[?]] in
from the [[?]] of the first time
instance to forward reports
to the authority concerned on the
delinquence of the units responsible
20/8/18. Nothing to report
21/8/18 HMD [[T?]] [[?]] lent two
wagons for transport of dental
equipment to Ludd and W[[?]]
also conveyed two of Dental
unit personnel, who will be
able to [[?]] equipment
Arrangements made through DMS
& DDG MO to transport
dismounted personnel of
Immobile Section numbering 35
in charge of RQMS on 24/8/18
from DRS to Jerusalem [[?]]
[[came?]] to camp & then by rail
to Ludd area This ought to

Patients from my unit & attached
units occasioned a considerable
amount of difficulty notwithstanding the
efforts of RMOs to have all patients
despatched before mid day
Malaria unit etc [[?]] [[?]]
is responsible for this
These patients were collected & left
with 1st A.L.H. F. Amb who
proceeded to evacuate them.
This reception of patients right
up to & after departure of
unit was facilitated by having
an E.P. area to have Tent
available for such purposes

Of unit cars only two travelled

O.C. is completely ignorant.

been left fairly clean by

of unburnt faeces
Large number of cases evacuated

Left Kilo 17 at 19.30.
Arrived Jerusalem midnight
Stopped [[Kuloriath ?]] water horses
but horses would not

at that hour
[* While passing through Jerusalem,
Amb was joined by wagon

This is a great pity for if

This will prove difficult
Communicated with Divn. Amb
accordingly
Motor Ambulances & their relation
to Field Ambulances as part
of equipment.
According to the latest [[ ?]]
[[of ?]] establishment a Light Horse
Field Ambulance has attached
to it as part of its equipment
4 L Amb & two heavy
motor Ambs.
The first question that arises
is [[?]] Why make any establishment
as regards the granting of equipment
when it would be far more
Satisfactory for all concerned
in an Ambulance if they were
merely detached ^to the Amb as the higher
medical command thought fit
The reason for this Statement
may be found in the following
remarks
During the sojourn of this Amb
in the Judean Valley from 15/7/18
to 22/8/18. The Mobile Section
had attached to it only one
motor Amb., with the exception
of two or three days 16 -18/7/18
when it had two.
One motor Amb was detached
to D.H.Q. according to orders
received from the A.D.M.S. office
It may be stated that the [[ ^?]] [[?]]
of the Amb. were not consulted
to the least degree on the matter
The remainder of the motors
were detached with the D.H.S.
When the Amb. moved out of
the J Valley on 22/8/[[18 ?]] it was
supposed to move out as a
whole with the [[?]] exception of
25 [[ofs ?]] of [[dismounted ?]] personnel
who were to proceed by extra
unit transport to Ludd and
the Amb was to provide &
arrange for xxx ^[[their collection ?]] [[meantime ?]]
all sick that occurred during the
trek & evacuations were to take
place to two places onlyduring the trek Jerusalem &
Ludd.
The Amb marched out with two
Motor Ambs accompanying it [[?]]
Owing to the Malignant Malaria incidence
there was a large number of stretcher
cases & it is extremely difficult
to evacuate these [[^? ?]] & yet find
room for transport of designated
personnel who are essential [[to ?]]
work [[?]] the xxxx [[^? ? ? ?]]xxx. It ^is on occasions like
the trek moving from the [[Juda ?]]
Valley to Ludd that the Motor
Ambulance proved so useful &
possesses such a marked advantage
over the horsed vehicle
Given the number of motors allotted
by establishment this Amb [[?]]
[[?]] found no difficulty in
dealing with the patients on trek
