Book by George Napier Sprod, 1942-1945 - Part 5
Hand drawn sketch - see original document
We soaked his head in glue
Hoping that would bring him to
Alas - all our efforts were in vain
For in spite of all we tried
He just heaved a sigh and died
Then sneezed, blowed his nose
and died again
Hand drawn sketch - see original document
No more upon the mat
Will he tease poor pussy cat
No more between his teeth he'll
chew her tail
No more he'll rub her nose
Up against the red-hot stove
Our little Willie's gone and kicked
the pail

"Rope"
"The mixture as before", as critics say -
The 'perfect crime' done in the same old way;
A murd'rer who recalls his crime with zest;
A strangled body in the old oak chest. . .
Two Nancy-boys, a semi-deaf old maid -
Appear in this familiar parade.
A crippled 'tec, addicted to his booze,
Unearths with skill a dozen obvious clues.
"Sir Richard", too, is once more in the cast -
As in a million murders of the past.
And Antoine - dear old Antoine! - he's there too -
The 'perfect butler' (with his routine clue).
The murderers (extraordinary chaps!)
Are smitten with chronic mental lapse;
The show on which their alibi is based
Can't be recalled - the tickets are misplaced. . .
Philosophy, psychology and crime
Are all discussed - to while away the time.
The same old 'grand finale's' introduced -
The lame detective crowing on his roost.
The police, of course, are waiting in the street,
and Brandon sobs admissions of defeat.
The whistle screams the triumph of the law. . .
Decidedly, " the mixture as before".
