The Official War histories of the Commonwealth
Government (Dr C. E. W. Bean), after his study of
the  collection of private war records preserved in the Australian
War Memorial Library, wrote:
"The private diaries in this collection furnish some of its most
valuable historical records, but, like all private memoirs which were
not compiled with any historical purpose, they should not be
regarded as first-hand evidence except where it is certain that they
are so.  The diarist is almost always sincere in his desire to record
accurately, but he is subject to no obligation or inducement to
indicate whether he is recording his own observations or incidents
told him by friends or heard at third or fourth hand at the mess-table.
Thus, in some of the diaries in this collection, scenes described with
vivid detail, and without any warning that they are told at second
or third hand, have been found to be completely inaccurate in
important details. A certain number also have been written up
or revised long after the events, though doubtless usually from notes
made at the time. In most cases the student must rely on his
experience and on internal evidence to guide him in judging what is
and what is not likely to be historically accurate".

Sir
/
With regard to my movements when connected with the Army
Nursing Service aboard I have to report as follows, -
I left Adelaide on 27th. Nov. , 1914 for Melbourne
where I joined the hospital ship "Kyarra" and sailed for Egypt
where, after landing, I was sent to No. 2. Australian General
Hospital at Mena House and later to No. 1. Australian General
Hospital at Heliopolis where I stayed for a few weeks and then
returned to Mena House. Here I stayed until the Gallipoli
Landing  after which I was transferred to Ghesira Palace for
the purpose of assisting to establish another branch of the
No. 2. A.G.H. From there I was sent, on Sep. 1st., 1915 to
Alexandria where I was put on duty at the 21st. British Hospital
to await the arrival of the hospital ship "Formosa" on which
ship I did transport duty in the Mediterranean from the middle
of Oct. to July 1915 and from there was sent to the British
xxxx MILITARY Hospital at Bagthorpe, Nottingham, England where I remained
for six months after which I was recalled and put
on duty at Dartford No. 3. Convalescent Hospital. After staying
here for a few weeks I was sent to France and stayed there
until the signing of peace in Nov. 1919, during which time I was
for six months (from Dec. 1917 to May 1918) at No. 3. Australian
Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium. I left France Dec.
1918 for England and returned to Australia where I was on duty
at Keswick, S.A. until appointed Matron of the Broken Hill and
District Hospital. I am on the Army Reserve List.
Yours faithfully,
JANET SINCLAIR WOOD
