Letters of Ronald Henry Etherton, November - December 1943- Part 6 of 6
Letter 59
Monday 27 December "43
Dear Sweetheart,
I love you, too . I
don't think it was a funny way
to start a letter at all. I think
it's a grand way. Those three
words from you are grand
anywhere and anyhow, provided
they're always to me. I like all
your letters but some more than
others. They are the ones that
are least materialistic. I don't
know why, I mean that I do but
just can't put it in words. I hope
that some of mine are like that.
Like what? Well, when yours are
"like that" I keep them in my
pocket or under my pillow and
read them about a dozen times.
On Saturday night in
Montrose we went to the show
and saw " Hello 'Frisco Hello " Yep.
2.
At long last, Alice Faye is a far
better singer than she used to be
crooner. I'd like to see it again.
She sang "You'll never know" very
well .Huh Huh That is the way you
feel? That is the way I'd like
you to feel because I miss you
just as much and some day
I'll be able to show you that
I love you every bit as much
Ron

Letter 60
Wednesday 29 December
Dear Jean,
Don't you think I'm silly
sometimes the way I write about things
that happened several days before? I
don't forget them. I just start to write
a letter and if they don't fit in I leave
them until the next or the one after.
It was on Sunday that I opened your
parcel but I haven't mentioned it before.
You said I wasn't to open it until
X'mas so I couldn't do so before we
went to Montrose but I opened your
Mum's and Pop's. The contents of both
parcels are sure a sight for sore
eyes. It's a great temptation to be
greedy but I'm sure I'd make myself
sick if I ate much at a time. My
stomach just isn't used to it. But
in any case I'd make sure not to
eat your candy too quickly. Uh Uh. I
do love you, very much.
Did I tell you about our
attempt a chimney sweeping? The
2.
fire in our room had started smoking.
so Sammy and I decided to do
something about it. We made the
grave mistake of trying to do it
after we had lit the fire, not
realising what difficulties we were to
experience. The roof is very awkward
to get up onto - impossible for
clumsy me, I discovered. Sammy
managed but boobed badly by
getting the stick we were using
stuck in the chimney pipe.
Fortunately we discovered that the
top section was separate and so
succeeded in getting it out. The
rest of the job was accomplished
without incident, and fairly
successfully except for the fact
that the soot we cleaned out was
now deposited equally over everything
in the room. What fun ! But the
fire doesn't smaoke any more
and we hope to get rid of the
3.
soot eventually.
Please excuse my ill disguised
haste. We were up at 5:30 am
today, did a long trip - no oxygen
again - and are scheduled for
the same tomorrow. So - It's
off to bed now
Goodnight and
All my love
Ron
