NUTRIENT FORMULAS

Stock solutions of Trace Elements

Stock Solution A — (BMZ solution) 

In ½ gallon of water are simultaneously

dissolved 3.2 grams (1 teaspoon)

each of boric acid (H3BO3), manganese

sulphate (MnSO4 . 7H2O) and zinc

sulphate (ZnSO4 . 7H2O).To this

solution ½ teaspoon of copper

sulphate (CuSO4 . 5H2O) is added if

desired. This solution may be

added to culture solutions at any

time before use.

Ideas for cultivation:- Strawberries, onions

lettuce, apple cucumbers, (butter beans), chillies,

red and black currants, passionfruit. (banana & other)

Daphne, tulips, maiden hair fern, carnations,

 

Stock Solution B -

Dissolve 0.8 gms (¼ Tspoon) of iron 

(ferric) chloride (FeCl3) or nitrate

(Fe(NO3)3 ) in 1 pint water.

Ferrous sulphate (FeSO4 . 7H2O) may be

used as source of iron but has

greater tendency to precipitate from

solution. Stock solution B should

only be added immediately before use.

In using any of culture solutions

described, Stock Sol. A may be

added in proportion of 10 cc (2 Tspoon)

to each 5 gals. of culture solution 
if pure chemicals are used, or in
proportion of 5 cc (1 Tspn) to each

5 gal if commercial grade chemicals 

are used.

Experiment with mushrooms in wood wool 

or similar material may prove interesting.

 

Stock Solution B should be

added to culture solutions just

before use in propn. of 20 cc (4 Tspn)

of B to each 1 gal of culture mixture.

Under conditions (bright days) iron 

may be used fast, if signs of iron

chlorosis, additional may be added.

FORMULA 1 Fertilising salts for culture solution

MONOPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE (KH2PO4) 5.9

5.9 gm/5 gals. {1¼ Tspn/5 gal (approx)}

CALCIUM NITRATE Ca(NO3)2 . 4H2O)

20.1 gm/5 gal - 4 Tspn/5 gal.

MAGNESIUM SULPHATE (MgSO4 . 7H2O) 

10.7 gm/ 5 gal - 2½ Tspn/5 gal

AMMONIUM SULPHATE (DRY) ((NH4)2 SO4)

1.8 gm/5 gal - ½ Tspn/5 gal

 

Each of these chemicals is dissolved
separately in about 1 pint or more 
of water, then solutions mixed 
and then diluted to 5 gallons.
Trace elements are added as 
directed (see Stock Solutions A & B).

The inclusion of Ammon. Sulph.
is said to be beneficial in 
maintaining the pH value of solutions 
within smaller range.

FORMULA II

MONOPOTASSIUM PHOSPHATE    {3.9 gm/5 gal

KH2PO4                                             {1 Tspn/5 gal

SODIUM NITRATE                            {6.4gm/5 gal

NaNO3                                                    {1 Tspn/5 gal   

 MAGNESIUM SULPHATE                {10.3 gm/5 gal

MgSO4 . 7H2O                                     {2½ Tspn/5 gal

CALCIUM CHLORIDE                       {3.2 gm/5 gal

CaCl2 (DRY)                                      {1 Tspn/5 gal

 

Each salt is dissolved separately, 
then mixed & diluted to 5 gal. 
Trace elements are added.

Two elements (sodium & chlorine) 
are not usually considered as 
plant food, nevertheless they do 
no harm in such low concentrations.

FORMULA III --  Culture solutions 
prepared from commercial grade chemicals.

SUPERPHOSPHATE                                   {5.8gm/5 gal

(MONOCALCIUM PHOSPHATE) CaHPO4  {2 Tspn/5 gal

SODIUM NITRATE                                       {6.4gm/5 gal

NaNO                                                         {1 Tspn/5 gal

MAGNESIUM SULPHATE                           {10.3 gm/5 gal

MgSO4 .7H2O                                               {2½ Tspn/5 gal

POTASSIUM CHLORIDE                            {3.9 gm/5 gal

KCl                                                               {1 Tspn/5 gal

Each salt dissolved separately, mixed 
then diluted to 5 gal. Superphosphate 
usually carries small amounts of 
insoluble matter, which can be allowed 
to settle & clear solution poured off.

N.B. ½ quantities Trace solutions used.

 

Formulas l, ll & lll have produced good

results with vegetables and flowers.

Experimenters advocate FORM IV 
during cloudy months of winter.
FORM V during moderately bright seasons
& FORM VI in very bright days of 
summer.

 

If growth tends to be a little

soft, the concentrations of salts

may be increased, or even doubled.

If desired, in these 3 formulas,

trace elements may be used, but

not in full quantities.

HYDROPONICS Plants can be grown

in sand, cinders, glass wool, wood 
wool &c. Sand can be boiled for

15-20 mins. to render bacteria free.

AVOID - metal containers, galvanised

piping, wire baskets, &c.

Rubber & glass preferable. Wire

to be coated with PETROLEUM ASPHALT

(avoid coal tar.)

DO change solutions regularly -

spray leaves & around roots.

LOOK TO aeration of roots &

solutions. Pump air through

solution.

 

Systems can be arranged with

capillary glass syphons or

lamp wick &c.

Wire baskets packed with

cotton wool with solution up

to the roots in jar. [Beware]

Look to aeration of roots. 
About 1 quart solution should 

be sufficient for average household 
plant, changing once per 
week. Water to be added to 
solution to make up loss by 
evaporation.

Seeds may be propagated in 
well drained sand tray with 
Glass cover. (minimise evaporation)
Seeds pushed about ½" into
the wet sand, and then 
sprayed freely with solotution

 

consisting of one part of 
regular fertilising solution 
to three parts of water. 
DO NOT place in hot sunlight. 
In winter, room 60° - 70°F satisfactory.
When seeds sprout, place in 
sunlight. DONT leave glass 
cover fully on, as it causes 
overheating.

When adding water, spray 
plant and wash sands &c 
around roots to overcome 
collection of salts.

Staying may be done by 
splitting corks & reaming.
Then packing stem with 
cotton wool.

Solution should have slightly 
acid value. (pH5-6).

Can be ascertained by Nitrazine
Test papers. Sulph. acid can be added

asphalt of petroleum extraction.

By raising or lowering bucket of

& comparison (if possible) to distribute.
Coal for fires, possibillity of grates.

Cup of morning tea &c. 
Cartage kept to gate, with receipts constantly 

checked. 
Scrap book or folder of cuttings &c of land

sales, to keep up with valuations.

Commonwealth Year Book. 
Motto for staff - A place for everything & everything

in its place. 

With discretion, attempt to make client 
realise he is getting service, part. with advert.

 

Distributions of handbills &c & display

for Advt (a) Bundle of bills stapled to

strong back, enabling the tearing off of sheets. 
(b) Sheet celluloid fastened with staples to

back holding sheets in place, enabling them

to be read and pulled out. 

Radio Ads. more in style of short snappy

reminders at intervals "Remember this

you cannot have again that lost opportunity"

Sale cards with several sheets of paper

stapled on, can be used a few times.

Circularising would seem to be the best & possibly

least expensive means of advertising. 

Stencils may be feasible for clear notation

of sale cards. Possibility of light blue cards.

Poultry Notes

Housing - 4 sq.ft. per bird. Perch space 9".

Half area (front) strewn with straw for

scratching & feeding in. NO draughts of air. 
Perches hinged & able to be folded back to

facilitate cleaning. 
Lice - Black leaf up along perch, about 2 hrs

before birds perch for night. 

Spouting makes very good trough for 

feeding mash. Shellgrit. Ash bath. 

Easterly aspect best for site (E - N)
Perches 3"x2" (2"x2")
Feed - 4½ oz per bird per day :-

2 oz mash, 2 oz grain, balance greens.

varies as weather.

Allegg - Salt, Bone Meal

Greens - Wongbock, lucerne, silver beet.
