At 7 o clock this morning left early
to go to Tunbridge Wells.
A lovely fresh morning & a
beautiful part of England to
journey thru, farms, haystacks
sheep & trees.
Arrived at T. Wells & went up
to see Mr Lambert who
gave me a warm welcome.
took me to lunch at his favorite
hotel, the Wellington, where I
was introduced to his wife, who,
after lunch, took me away in the
car, a talbot, to see round about
the place, afterwards going to the hotel
for afternoon tea, then driving me to
the station where I caught a train at
6 P.M & arrived home at 12.45 a.m. 7 hours
They have a lovely big Great dane.

Went to Guilford on bike, picked
up photos, & cycled back in a steady

Had a very exciting evening, one of
our patients became insane &
threatened all the others, wanted
a knife or a razor all the time
then when we wanted to give
him another needle darted out
the door & we had to chase him
for half a mile before bringing
him back again.
Eventually put him to bed & gave
him a shot of f morphia.

Went for a stroll by myself, one
gets sick of the sight of fellows
who have no other object than
to blaspheme, drink & consort with
women. Had a time of quiet
prayer which made me feel
100%. What a difference when the
Christ is able to help & understands.
& how different a christian world would
be.
24^23.11. 40
Went to Guilford to do some
shopping, mostly buying
stuff for the east.
Big crowd there doing
XMAS shopping.

Had a marvellous time in the afternoon
took a boys bible class at the
Godalming Methodist church,
a jolly nice lot of chaps, about
16 or 17 & very interesting
took as my subject TIMOTHY II
afterwards I went home to tea
with Brien Boacher,
the bible class leader.
where I had the pleasure
of meeting the rest of the
family who appear to be
very nice people.

xxxxx Then after tea
we went to church, where
we had a carol service
afterwards in the hall
at the back, a jolly good
fire blazing, it reminded
me of times down at Gilbys
friendly hour.

My first christmas
in England, well I wondered
what it would be like,
I expected snow on the
ground, a log fire blazing &
the winter wind raging.
However, it needed
modification, there was no
snow, no bitter wind, but
there was a jolly log fire
where I went with Jack
the mills' at Godalming.
Dinner today at the 3 A.G.H.
was an eye opener, firstly,
instead of our own mess,
we all gathered in the nurses
old dining hall, where we
saw a wonderful array
of good things, nuts, chocolates
(beer for those who drank)
(not many who didn't) ginger beer,
& for dinner itself, we had
turkey & chicken with
brussels sprouts & baked potatoes
The Major came in &
wished us all a happy
christmas, then we toasted
him, general toasts following
during the proceedings several
flashlight photos were taken
hope they turn out alright.
Altogether it was not a bad
christmas at all.

Goodbye to 1940
31.12 .40
Well, once again we face a new year
and an ending to this bitter strife
I pray. a safe return to Aust.
Army life means ruination for the
future if it goes on like this.
watching day after day for
the enemy, night after night &
doing practically nothing else.
though just now the Aust news
was read by an Aust journalist
who gave us a resume of our chaps
in the east & also reminded us
what a valuable part we also have
played by just being in this country.
& ended by quoting Milton.
They also serve, who only stand
& wait.
Happy new year to all
New Year
1 . 1 . 41
Well, so be it, & let it be
a year of high purpose, high
resolve in a decaying age.

Snow coming down fairly
heavily, will probably last
longer than the last lot
as it is a much heavier fall.
took photos in the snow
18.1.41
Took Wally Flemmings up to
Thydon Ball to see the snow,
what beautiful effects it has
as it rests feather like upon
the branches, turning the
landscape into a fairyland of white
shapes, the imprint of small feet
on the soft snow as some small
bird or animal passes a
never to be forgotten scene.
