times over our hospital fairly

low one stage. British fighter

went up after him putting in a ½

bright flash of tracer in him

& receiving same with compliments

archie & searchlights followed him

12 new men have joined our

unit making things a lot

easier for us all.

Official six days leave starts

Tuesday, will probably

spend it with Farrars.

Wonderful news. Six days leave

starting tues evening

After fixing up rail warrants

free to any place in England

Scotland or Wales, also 14.6

for the six days as well as

all money credited to us

we caught a train, I went to

London, stayed there overnight,

2 air raid alarms during evening

first one lasting from 8 to 12

& the next from 1 to 3

so had only about 3 hours

sleep.

Arising in the morning,

caught the Birmingham

train from Euston,

passing thru some

wonderful country

on the way after about

2 ½ hours arrived at

Birmingham only to

discover I should have

changed at Coventry for Kenilworth

where I was staying with

the Farrars.

Eventually arrived there.

Next I settled in for the

six days. How good to see

Dick again after so long,

never thinking that I would

again. Dick being on duty

with the balloon barrage

I strolled down to Kenilworth

castle next morning, only about

½ mile away, & spent the morning

looking around at the

old banqueting halls &

other old rooms.

obtained postcards.

Later in the morning caught a bus

to Coventry & lunched there

with Dick at Pattisons.

Strolled around afterwards

finding it not so interesting

of course as other places,

being an industrial city.

Back to tea after tea settled

down for the evening, air alarm

went, this continued to

happen every evening I was there.

one night I could see the

parachute flares they dropped

to find their targets.

Next day I went to Leamington

spa. An interesting & rather

attractive town, bands

concerts are being held in

the gardens every day so I

went across & listened, I met

a very interesting canadian airman

here, he had been to India, Egypt,

Norway, Aust, & France & has seen

quite a lot of action at the front

over in France & Norway.

Its most amusing to walk along

& hear people whispering to

one another "Australian"

I don't think they had seen any

others.

Spent next day at Warwick Castle

the most beautiful one I have

yet seen & in a good state of

preservation. took some

photos from inside.

Also visited Lord Lycesters

hospital, now used as a

home for 12 old soldiers.

Built in 1571 it is an

amazing piece of good carving

The Lycester arms & shields

hanging everywhere.

Here there were many interesting

relics dating back to 1400 cent.

Coming home received 2 snappy

salutes from 2 tommy privates

they think we are officers

in our shoes & tie.

Really most embarrassing.

Next day we went for

a 100 miles drive thru

the cotswolds & on the

a place called Bibury.

a wonderful old place,

many tourists from other countries

go there, its reckoned one

of the prettiest towns in

England. Monday eventually

arrived & so

homeward once again to

Surrey.

Yesterday wed, a terrific

battle was fought overhead

at a tremendous height, we

could only see the planes as

the sun caught their wings,

& hear the machine guns

rattling.

99 of them down, we lost

waterloo in other words has

been blown ^flooded up. traffic has been
