nothing of any importance
TUES

WED

Rumour of Australian mail
next weekend also
we are shifting to
Milford, Surrey
Had a time of great fellowship &
Bible study tonight with
Mr Way again, Allan
Was also there afterwards
A great lad, not many have
his high standards today
amongst the ordinary man
& women. Am praying
that soon he too will
receive the friendship of Christ
& follow Him as guide
THURS
1.8.40
Washed all my gear, in
readiness for a move
had a swim in afternoon
also received my pay
first increase being
specialist pay.
FRI
2.8.40
Obtained a leave pass & went
with Allan to Salisbury
to see about my photos
they are not so good, the
hat being to pointy, the best
one being without it on.
wander about parts I had
not previously seen, went
to see [[?]] the pictures
“Tower of London “, a jolly good
show too.
Allan is a great lad &
Very enthusiastic about
scouts.
SAT
3.8.40
Pack today once more tents down
again & boxes loaded.
Went in a very comfortable
parlor coach to our new
quarters in Milford, Surrey.
Wonderful scenery all the
way, ripe corn & wheat
a lovely reddish brown
like a line of fire ending
where green grass grew.
Surrey is the most
beautiful country I have
seen so far being thickly
wooded & hilly.
Arriving at our new
quarters unloaded our
gear & inspected our
new home. A marvellous
place just being finished
hot & cold water in our
quarters, a kitchen with
every convenience you
could think of, a mess
better even than our last
& beds, real beds to sleep
in, lockers for our
personal belongings,
It is a most peaceful
place ^so far away from any
noise & bustle & I believe
a good service to London
& other places of interest.
SUN
4.8.40
Settling in still, obtained leave
tonight to visit
Godalming, an interesting trip
thru one of the most
beautiful parts of England
Surrey.
It is very like Tremont
except for the difference in
trees, beech, oak elm &
holly predominate here.
Had an interesting time
with 2 lads about 12
evacuees from other parts so
Godalming , they walked
along with us for a time
showed us round, in return
we shouted them ice cream.
A lady kindly invited us
in to supper afterward
where the whole family
made us most welcome
indeed & asked us to come
again some time.
Altogether we had a
time of great enjoyment.
& our hospital here is
situated in grounds
surrounded by firs & other
trees making a thick
wood most impressive
in the early morning as the
fog drifts thru it & the suns
rays strike as shafts of
light.
5/8/40
Mon
Will take quite a while to get
into the way of things & settle
down here, we are now
on A.G.H., instead of A.S.H.
which is better, new color
patches issued soon.
Went for a walk tonight with
Jack up the hill & thru forest glades
like the Sherbrooke falls country,
most beautiful to wander
along the little winding tracks
thru the forest
6/8/40
Kitchen fatigue all day
with Jack.
Had a bath & went to bed
early, awoke about 2 or 3
in the morning for the
accompaniment of banging &
filthy language, & knew
a lot of the boys
had arrived home.

12/8/40
Went for a stroll tonight
thru very thick country,
trees arching over the road
making a wonderful
frame for a painting
or photo.
Good to be able to get out
amongst something clean
& beautiful.
away from the mean & narrow
outlook of many here.
So feel free of it all
it reminds one of leaving
ones way out of a cobweb of
sin that seeks to
engulf one.

At 6.30 this morning, observed
my first sight of a dogfight
It was thrilling, the rattle
of machine guns, white dots
as the suns rays caught
on our machines as they
circled round in a
tight turn, pink clouds
& a German bomber
which fled for its life
away London wards from
the fight.
14.8.40
Received our mail
from Jean.
15.8.40
Went to Guildford in the
evening, wonderful
letter from Jean.
