Immediate - Comd 11 3rd Corps G.I. Staff Message Control Chief Cypher Officer.
It has been necessary to give up the struggle, but I want the
reason explained to all ranks. The forward troops have held their
ground, but the essentials of war have run short. In a
few days we shall have neither petrol nor food. Many types
of ammo have run are short, and the water supply on which
the next civilian populations, and many of the fighting troops
are dependant, threatens to fail. This situation has been
brought about partly by being driven off our [[dumps?]] and
partly by hostile duty and air action. Without these sinews
of war we cannot fight on.
I thank all ranks for their efforts throughout the campaign.

Lt Col. [[M?]] J. Anketell - C/o 2/4 MG Bn.
Wounded Thur 12 Feb 42 - Died of Wounds
Capt. Colin Cameron has accompanied the C.O. round his Coy
area and returning reported to Major Augh that the C.O had been
badly wounded. This was at 2130 hrs on 12 Feb.
Bn H.Q. was at Road Jen 768127. C Coy had lost [[?]]
L.K .& H. Lt. Col. Anketell had been [[sound?]] with Capt. Cameron and
Major Robertson then comd a Coy of 20 Bn. Later promoted to Lt. Col
(& he comd the "G" Bn in Adam Park [[?]] & took that Unit away
[[across?]] from Syme Road) to find a new perimeter. He did
NOT tell Major Augh at HQ that he was going away. Major
Green, Bn 2 I/C was there having arrived at 1800 hrs from Mt Echo
with 11 PI & some add men. Major Augh towards "D" Coy
area 766129. The C.O. was hit by shell or mortar approaching
that area. Major Augh says he spoke to him @ rd. Jen..
Capt. Anderson R.M.O. dressed him and sent him back to
Alexandria Hospital.
At Changi for some weeks definite news regarding
Col. Anketell was not forthcoming. One day I was at the
Roberts Barracks Hospital visiting Lieuts. Wankey and Watson
and spent same time with Lieut. Baron Calaman (2/2 MJ.)
On leaving he introduced me to an English Medical Major
who had been on duty at Alexandria Hospital at the time.
He was able to say quite definitely that the C.O. had NOT
been killed by the Japanese who overran the place during action
