I have just returned lately from a war tour of
Malaya where my hosts the Japanese mistaking me for an Australian priest gave me free access to the camps of caged
allied prisoners of war men languishing in Syonan to that
one time pearl of the Orient.
My chief ports of call were the camps on and around
the Avenues of Bukit Timah Rd one time residential
district of British occupiers. There I found all types of prisoners.
Hefty English gunners, sturdy Scotch. Infantry men and tall
lean Australians. These captures live well! - I would tell you
of sack after sack pf the best Burmese rice that daily disappears
into the bowel of these camps, either to be devoured or ejected
in some manner or other ∧ in fact ∧ so popular is this cereal, one tropical
night was cleft with cheers as news came hot foot from Rangoon
that the Burma rice crop has double this season.
One the whole these boys keep fit. To say
nothing of 5 Medical Officers working day & night, there are
five modern laboratories featuring the most up to date medical
apparatus, striving to keep the health of the captives up to
scratch! Did I say scratch?? That is indeed unfortunate as
a hell disease of the testicles known amongst these boys as
Bukit Timah Bollocks is rife!!
To combat this ticklish disease, these unfortunates
of war fashion small ball-bags of some absorbant material such
as Kotex still miraculously obtainable in the world without
women.
Let me take you now to a spot where these bronze
backed prisoners work. There stripped to the ball-bags, they fool
the gullible Nippon - gunners into believing they are stepping up
production. On one day you can see lean complaining cornstalk
slowly scattering stones on a shrine road, on another day smaller
but equally sturdy Highlanders, lethargically gather up these self same stones.
At luncheon interval sympathetic Chinese vendors nimbly evading
Nippon Guards, with familiar cries of "one cent one" selll slabs of
pineapple to the hungry labourers.
In return there crafty workmen trade the very tools
issues to them by the Imperial Japanese Army (Chunkel beads they told
me were worth 50¢!)
Those of my listeners who were old residents of the Bukit
Timah area will be interested to know that these war veterans
live in considerable comfort i you one time houses, and so
much space have they, that under recent eviction orders many of
you old houses are now vacated! (I can see them now in my minds eye)
Some of my listeners in war torn Britain & Aust
will be wondering how these boys amuse themselves. There is
certainly no lack of entertainment. Concerts featuring card sharpers
and Highland bagpipes, boxing tourneys when it isn't raining and
all in wrestling bouts, yes even the Movies! Why the first
night of my stay I was honour guest at a special showing of the
red hot Nipponese siccess. "Dysentry Rides Again" while another
favourite of theirs seem to be "Snow White & 7 Dwarfs"
These temporary jail birds have plenty opportunity of studying
world wide news allbeit thought the Jap glasses. I refer of cours to the
Flash Spot daily the "Synonan Times" Typical of such news is, I quote
"The Aust Govt will make no more swim-suits as wartime economy measure"
Looks like it will be a popular surf season! Indeed this news was a great
incentive to some of my recent friends, many of them natural born surf
riders, to make a break first to be back in Aussie for this years surf season.
In spite of my cunning disguise many of you will doubtless
wonder how I managed to wander so freely into S'pore and surrounding Kampongs
here I will let you into the secret. The pass word boys is SUGAR!! I shall be on the
air again next week when I hope to describe in some detail my
getaway from war locked Syan-to So long folks.
